I was just reading about it and his story seems very plausible. I am sure this is a common occurence, it would not be hard to know whether or not he really called the police.

Sad what happened but might be a good life lesson.

Yes, very plausible. It wouldn't surpise me.

The boy's story is definitely plausible, though from my understanding, there are no witnesses to verify what he says happened.

It's just a very sad situation all around.

Sad story. It will be interesting to see if a state where people broadly support the rights of citizens to carry deadly weapons for the purpose of self defense will convict this kid as an adult.

My first grade daughter was punched by a female class mate yesterday, completely unprovoked. I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the culture of violence we've endorsed but it still is frustrating.

Didn't you get into fistfights when you were a kid? Kids fight, and as they get older, if they allow themselves to become civilized, they fight less. Kids fight the way puppies bark at strangers. Some people might be able to civilize their children earlier than others, but on the whole, parental input to socialize the 'bark' out of their children will be limited by intelligence and natural temperament.

So, if you're implying that it's normal for my girl to be punched in the 1st grade on an unprovoked basis, I don't agree.
It isn't 'normal,' but it certainly isn't unheard of. I sure as heck wouldn't read into it some larger indictment of a 'culture of violence we have endorsed.' That is Tipper Gore country.

EDIT: And PS, that totally sucks that your kid got punched in the face.

Our daughter has my permission and blessing if someone ever hits her, to pick up the hardest thing she can wield and start hitting the person in the head with it until they pull her off her.

Every time she comes home in tears because one of those mongrels hits her, I remind her of this, and she cries some more because "that's not what Jesus would do."

So far this year things have been much better since she's in the magnet program.

I got picked on in first grade, but by 3rd grade when I was 35 lbs and 2" taller than the rest of them, no one farked with me.....to my face. Sure, some little assholes would call me "Big Mac" or other McDonald's-inspired names from the sidelines, but I just laughed at their irrelevancy--not much has changed.
