  • "These Refs Suck! These Rules Suck!"

I hereby anoint this thread the official place to bitch and moan about the refs and/or rules.

I am not a fan of "every play is reviewed" policy. Instant replay/review is great (and necessary), but the college approach is flawed. It slows down the game, yes, but worse than that, it changes the way many officials approach the game. It seems now that, rather than do everything to get the ruling right the first time, often times the official(s) will do whatever gets the biggest reaction from the sideline or fans, knowing that replay will get the call correct if the "fun" call isn't the right call. This mindset is dangerous because sometimes the video angles aren't there to provide the "incontrovertible/indisputable" evidence necessary to get the call right, even where common sense and logic seem to indicate something different than the call on the field.

I say give the coaches 2 challenges, and every challenge that is successful gets returned to them. Review every play within the final 2 minutes of the half and game. Similar to the NFL, but better (because in the NFL, you only get a third challenge if you get both your first two correct).

    To be continued. . .

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

I'm okay with the replay system so far. I think too many plays get reviewed that really aren't that close, though.

Another huge flaw in the system. That's why I like the coaches challenges as opposed to the booth review of all plays. If they challenge something unsuccessfully, they lose that flag. If they do it twice, then no more challenges from that coach. The game speeds up, and the reviews are spent on meaningful plays.

True points, but I would rather not introduce replays as a strategic element of the game when there exists other means to verify a ref's call.

It works great in the NFL. Which, stupidly, is probably a huge reason why the NCAA does it differently. Personally, I have no problem handing strategic elements over to the coaches.

Hawaii got hosed on call last night that shoulda been a touchdown. Even after the review, the ref still blew it.

I don't know how they don't rule it a TD. Those were WAC refs too. Sheesh. Even worse than the botched call was the ref's mic wasn't working so he held up his hands signaling touchdown. The place goes nuts. Then the ref turns his mic on and explains that he wasn't signaling touchdown but showing the distance from the goal. That crew got booed off the field bad at the half.

Review is awful and does nothing but destroy the tempo and flow of games. I hate it in every instance.

In full agreement with how the replay system should be in NCAA -- two coaches challenges per half, with all plays reviewable from the booth in the final 1-2 minutes of a half/game. That's what made the MWC semi-cool in 2005 -- we were ahead of the curve on replay matters, and had the NFL system. We were the only conference in the league to ever use the NFL system.

I'm beginning to think that the requirement for conclusive video evidence is producing poor results.

The guys in the booth are able to pause, zoom, watch multiple angles, slow motion, judge trajectories etc etc - why should their assessment of what happened be subordinate to the blurred real time vision of one or two officials on the field.

Either do away with it or adapt the intended meaning of "conclusive" to allow for more common sense judgement on plays like the Bradley fumble yesterday.

I really think this is the biggest issue right now. The same common sense and judgement that is allowed in real time calls should be allowed in reviews.

I stand by my post from September in this thread. Replay is awful and does nothing but slow down the pace and tempo of the game. It isn't about "getting it right" or they would be able to review penalties also. It is crutch for bad officials.

Replay should just go away permanently. Football survived for decades without it and would continue to survive without it.
