  • What is your favorite distance/time to run?

I went for a run Monday for the first time in three weeks. I ran on an injury in October, and it took several months to heal. Since healing, I've run sporadically, maybe once every two to three weeks, and I've definitely gotten out of shape.

It felt really good to run, but my legs were a bit stiff the next day. I ran three miles, and I wondered at the time if I should shorten it a bit considering my poor condition, but I REALLY like the 3-4 mile distance for a run. It just seems the perfect distance because it ensures a 25-35 minute workout - enough time to feel good after, but not so much time that I feel like I've wasted time.

So this all made me wonder if you have a favorite time and or distance to workout.

15 miles, but I'm not often in shape to run it. When I do prepare for a marathon or half, the ability to run 15 keeps me there for a while. It takes until the three-mile mark for me to hit the less-painful fat-burning stage so 3-4 miles definitely ranks in a low percentile for me. I'd probably put 5-6 second.

mine is usually about a 3 miler. There is an easy loop from my house that it an absolute no brainer. I can get ready for my run and be back in less than 30 minutes.

I seem to have to motivate myself I am going to go out for 5 or more miles. I can do it, but most of the times I don't make the effort. I wish I was inclined to run further, but as of right now I am still lazy.

For me, the 10K is the best distance. It's long enough that you have to be in decent aerobic shape, but short enough that you don't beat up your body. I think marathons are too tough on your body. Halfs are a good distance, but still a little long. My current race plan is a couple of relays (Ragnar-type), because they're just fun, one half-marathon, and a few 10k's every year, with the occasionaly 5K if I feel like it (or like the shirt).
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Look at you, Mr. Metric System!

I too like the ca. 6-mile run the best. Takes me about an hour.

I currently run 10-milers, and it's pretty boring (treadmill) unless there's a game on TV.

What is this "10-miler" of which you speak? Is that more or less than a 15K?

Race length, I like 10Ks. I work in a run once or twice a week into my daily workouts. I usually run for one hour and cover about 7.5 miles, give or take depending on how energetic I am feeling.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I do five miles every other day. On the other days I go ~15 miles on my bike.

lol. I raced in a 10 k this past weekend. It was 3 miles uphill, about 1000 feet, and then 3 miles back down the way you came. This was on a sandy dirt road. First place guy beat me by 10 minutes. There was nothing world class about it except Deena Kastor's husband beat me by 8 minutes.

I am hoping for the next race that the #1 woman doesn't show, so my wife can win a free pair of shoes for the overall race series. Free shoes rock.
