  • The official effective 2010 political ad thread

I thought it might be fun for people (regardless of political persuasion) to post the YouTubes of political ads they find effective. I love political ads and love to study them. Here's one by Sharron Angles's campaign that, regardless of how you feel about her as a candidate, is pretty strong:

Are we allowed to disagree on the effectiveness of an advertisement? If so, I would like to dispute your claim that Sharon Angle's ad was effective. I thought the silliness of it further marginalized her as a serious candidate and played to her weakness as someone who has difficulty addressing substantive issues.

    If not, please disregard.

Not a commercial, but pretty darn effective. I'd vote for him.

It's in the eye of the beholder, and obviously the ad didn't work for you. But you are not the intended audience! They are trying to get to independents and people who (unlike most here on CUF) have not made up their minds how to vote.

Even though I don't think much of her as a candidate I think that ad's dynamite. Not high art, mind you, but a very good ad. Mark Halperin, pretty much a left-of-center commentator/pundit, thinks so too:

Republican candidates can do a version of this ad in almost every race in the country. You don't need a focus group to figure out that this is a powerful message.
Great stuff. There must be some Democrat ads out there that are good. Anyone?

Just for fun, her is what may be the most famous political ad in history. It ran only once, and was pulled after howls of outrage from the Goldwater campaign. Once was more than enough:

Can I agree with YOhio and say that this was ridiculous. A love angle, the music, the "in bed with each other" taken way too far. No way I'm voting for her after I see that.

Well, Goldwater walked right into ads like that, as scurrilous as they were. "Extremism in defensie of liberty is no vice." Yeah, right, Barry. Famous last words of a presidential candidate.

BTW, wuap, I hate to break it to you, but you are not among the audience the Angle ad tries to reach. It's for undecided independents, not long-haired hippy freak ivory tower Birkenstock-wearing academics. So no one ever expected it to persuade you.

Just because we're not the intended audience doesn't mean we can't opine as to the effectiveness of the ad on that demographic. I still think this type of SNL-type campaigning will end up hurting a lot more than helping. Reid just needs to shoot back with a 'these are serious times that require serious people' ad to cut the legs out from underneath her. It would resonate, not only with the undecided in the middle but also with Republicans who are unhappy with the court jesters of the tea party movement (Palin, Beck, Paul, Bachmann, Angle, etc).

I'm exactly the audience she's trying to reach (according to LA, anyway). Plus, I am a future constituent!

I think the ad is horrible and insults my intelligence. Its overly simplistic and down right cheesy. The image with the money showering down on the candidate is ridiculous. These sorts of ads really turn me off candidates like Angle because they assume that I know nothing about the race and that I'll accept these broad, over-generalizations whole cloth.

Plus, Sharon Angle's got the crazy eyes.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

You're wrong. LAU says it's brilliant and if you don't agree then you're not the audience she's trying to reach. End of discussion.

That's a relief. If I'm not the intended audience, at least I don't have to watch it anymore.

Of course you can opine! That's the whole idea of the thread. You may be right. People keep reporting that Angle is doing better and actually campaigning like a serious candidate (I haven't been watching). I do not know how this ad will play. It is only a 30-second ad, and I am sure her poeple focus-grouped it. Her campaign management has been bringing in real experienced political pros in an effort to save her.

I agree with you - if Sue Loudon or Danny Tarkanian had been nominated, Reid would be 10-15 points behind and preparing for his ambassadorship nomination.

OK, then vote against Reid. Don't consider yourself voting for Angle.

I don't know, Sue Loudon would never get my vote. I listened to a few interviews with her on the local NPR station. She was the most arrogant piece of work I've heard. Any time the interviewer (a really impartial sort of guy) brought up anything she didn't like she accused him getting his questions from the Reid camp. She actually flat out accused him of that. Numerous times. Then when he asked her to explain some of her campaign views she told him that if he wasn't going to do his research before the interview she wasn't going to help him out. That woman gave the worst political interview I'd ever heard.
