I actually do think BYU will ultimately end-up there. But ND would be the best of all possible outcomes. But why would ND want to go to the Big-12 over the Big 10?
I'd seriously like to hear opinions.
Everyone talks about ND's "mega-deal" - and to be realistic, it's no longer that "mega." $15 million is nice, but the SEC's gotta already be paying close to that to its members. I know the Big 10 and SEC were throwing out numbers in the $20-$25 million range with their super-conference alignments, giant 'footprints," huge conference championship game, and bowl tie-ins. Come to think of it, didn't the Big 12 "guarantee" TAMU $20 million a year in total Big 12 revenue to get them to walk away from the SEC?
Plus, ND hasn't exactly been tearing it up on the field (or with their ratings on NBC) for the last 5 or 6 years. Their mega-deal has to be renegotiated soon, and they might not like where the new deal is headed. There very well could be a clear financial benefit to joining a conference. But then again, why would they pick the Big 12 over the Big 10?
Is there an advantage in being in a different conference than all the other schools nearby? They're certainly surrounded by the Big 10. Indiana, Purdue, IL, Michigan, Mich St, Northwestern and Ohio State are all within three hours or so. Is there some advantage that being different would get ND? If not, why not just go with the Big 10? Their conference-owned TV network, their push for a 16-team footprint & associated money, all seem to make the Big-10 the obvious choice.
Is the potential ability to keep TV revenue negotiated separate from the Big-12 that big of an attraction? Just what does Texas get to keep above and beyond the standard Big12 money? Something tells me that this would be the main driver in the attraction. How much money does the Big 12 bring to the table, and how much more could ND get from their non-conference games? How much money does the Big 12 'guarantee' ND for bringing them the Chicago metro area to the Big 12 footprint? I TAMU is promised $20 million, how much would they promise ND?
I'm really trying to wrap my head around this idea. Why would ND be interested?

). Depending how the Big Ten is sliced that may not be the case. They would most likely be in the same division as tOSU.
