  • I'd love to believe the BYU + ND to Big12 thing...

I actually do think BYU will ultimately end-up there. But ND would be the best of all possible outcomes. But why would ND want to go to the Big-12 over the Big 10?

I'd seriously like to hear opinions.

Everyone talks about ND's "mega-deal" - and to be realistic, it's no longer that "mega." $15 million is nice, but the SEC's gotta already be paying close to that to its members. I know the Big 10 and SEC were throwing out numbers in the $20-$25 million range with their super-conference alignments, giant 'footprints," huge conference championship game, and bowl tie-ins. Come to think of it, didn't the Big 12 "guarantee" TAMU $20 million a year in total Big 12 revenue to get them to walk away from the SEC?

Plus, ND hasn't exactly been tearing it up on the field (or with their ratings on NBC) for the last 5 or 6 years. Their mega-deal has to be renegotiated soon, and they might not like where the new deal is headed. There very well could be a clear financial benefit to joining a conference. But then again, why would they pick the Big 12 over the Big 10?

Is there an advantage in being in a different conference than all the other schools nearby? They're certainly surrounded by the Big 10. Indiana, Purdue, IL, Michigan, Mich St, Northwestern and Ohio State are all within three hours or so. Is there some advantage that being different would get ND? If not, why not just go with the Big 10? Their conference-owned TV network, their push for a 16-team footprint & associated money, all seem to make the Big-10 the obvious choice.

Is the potential ability to keep TV revenue negotiated separate from the Big-12 that big of an attraction? Just what does Texas get to keep above and beyond the standard Big12 money? Something tells me that this would be the main driver in the attraction. How much money does the Big 12 bring to the table, and how much more could ND get from their non-conference games? How much money does the Big 12 'guarantee' ND for bringing them the Chicago metro area to the Big 12 footprint? I TAMU is promised $20 million, how much would they promise ND?

I'm really trying to wrap my head around this idea. Why would ND be interested?

Notre Dame currently has a contract with NBC good until 2015. This contract is most likely worth around $9M per year for their 8 home/neutral games (With the non-home games and the bowl game I read somewhere that ND gets around $15M or so per year). NBC, however, has been getting half the ratings with ND than the other networks. Unless ND can significantly improve their ratings NBC may be offering less money the next go around. It seems that ND will be getting less money from its bread and butter contract after 2015 and if ND was in BCS AQ conference they would be making more money every year. Revenue shares for the Big Ten and SEC are $17M+ per team. The revenue share for top tier Big 12 teams will be $20M if Beebe delivers as promised.

The Big Ten is a revenue sharing conference. It is possible (if any of these wild rumors are true) that the Big 12 will allow ND to keep their NBC contract for home games. Of course, the Big 12 will need to get an exemption for ND in their current contracts at least until 2015.

Also, ND's AD and Texas' AD are good friends. They recently scheduled a four-game home-home series starting in 2015.

If in the Big 12 ND would very likely replace NU in the weaker north division. This would give them a good possibility of playing in the conference championship nearly every year (if they can beat BYU ). Depending how the Big Ten is sliced that may not be the case. They would most likely be in the same division as tOSU.

I can't see, however, ND walking away from its long time, Big Ten rivals (Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue). Also, ND is right in the middle of Big Ten country. They would be a natural addition to the Big Ten.

Yeah, culturally and regionally it is a Big 10 school. The Big 12 would be a very odd fit.

But how many contracts did it take them to schedule it? If it was only one, color me not impressed.

No way is it culturally a Big 10 school. Maybe traditionally.

I'm kind of enjoying the BYU ND pipe dream, so I want to explore it further.

One question. Is there any exit penalty from the Big East for Notre Dame. I know the football school have a hefty cost associated with defection. Do the basketball schools or Notre Dame have the same penalty?

I was thinking that a Notre Dame transition would be easier in 2012 than 2011 because I was under the impression they had fewer games schedules in 2012, but they do have 10 already.

How can they already have 13 games scheduled? I don't see an @Hawaii in there. They obviously will have to drop one.

This is the only way I can make sense of ND and BYU to B12.

              1. ND is under contract 'til 2015 with NBC and probably wants to keep its TV deal.

              2. Texas wants what ND (to some extent) has: additional TV revenue for its games, in the form of a Longhorn TV channel.

              3. BYU apparently has the equipment to run its own channel. So, you have the Godfather of the B12 who wants what BYU has (equipment) and what ND has (TV autonomy), but 9 other schools who want to ride the Texas gravy train....so you bring in ND (the golden calf of CFB)...who can say no to them, and BYU, who has the infrastructure for HD broadcasting (allegedly).

I'm not saying I buy it, but from this limited perspective it makes some sense.

This should make you not want to explore it further. Just enjoy the pipe dream (should be easy since you've probably been doing it your whole life).

I'm confused. Are you talking about me being a BYU fan all my life? I haven't been.

I therefore assume you're talking about my religion. I appreciate your support and encouragement of it.
