  • Bowl ratings, Utah vs. BYU

There have been people wondering what the bowl ratings have been for Utah and BYU games over the past 5 years. Here they are:

    2009/10
    Utah vs. Cal: 2.81 share
    BYU vs. Oregon State: 2.58

    2008/09
    Utah vs. Alabama: 7.80
    BYU vs. Arizona: 2.50

    2007/08
    BYU vs. UCLA: 2.48
    Utah vs. Navy: 2.10

    2006/07
    Utah vs. Tulsa: 2.03
    BYU vs. Oregon: 1.97

    2005/06
    BYU vs. Cal: 2.40
    Utah vs. Georgia Tech: 2.16

So, to sum up - BYU has had better ratings in 2 of the years, Utah has had better ratings in 3 of the years (but one of those years was a BCS game which they should have much better ratings). I just found it interesting how, overall, the two teams draw rather similar tv audiences.

With all this available information, I can't imagine why Las Vegas keeps inviting BYU back when they could have had Utah last year. Must be some mormon conspiracy..

I think it was Oregon's ugly uniforms.

That and the blow out nature of the game.

The Gods were punishing them for how they beat OU that year

I thought the Gods did that the next year, in the Holiday Bowl.

No, that was delayed gratification for OU fans. Punishment is usually more swift

I once read an article (WSJ?) that took the ratings from bowl games over a 5-year period, accounted for the school's alumni base and state population, and from that (and other?) data concluded that Oregon was the best TV draw in the country for bowl games.

Sadly, that article was at least 3 years old, and I can't seem to find it online.

Because what's-her-name and Dr. Hill hate each other's guts. Hill said something like "We'll never play in your crappy bowl again, even if you invite us" and she said "You don't have to worry about that because we never wanted you anyway."

Either that or because the bowl committee knows they can sell all the 2-for-1 tickets to those cheap Mormons in Vegas.
