  • Spirit of the Gulf Coast

I went to elementary and high school with this guy. He's a good man, and he's trying to document what's been going on in the Gulf since April; a folk history as it were. This is a link to a video announcing the upcoming project. If anyone wants to follow along, the website is:

I'll update this as time goes by.

How much of the "damage" has been due to the government, et al, shutting down the gulf coast versus actual damage caused by oil contamination?

Not sure. It'll be interesting to see what's worse: the oil, or the reaction/response to the oil.

I watched a thing the other night on guys who harvest oysters and how there had been a massive "die off" of oysters almost over night, not because of the oil but because the barriers erected to keep the oil out had disturbed some sort of delicate balance that nourished them properly.

Then the interesting (and unknowable?) question would be whether or not the lack of barriers would have yielded the same die off.

I guess even with hindsight one prefers them to take the proactive course, unless it becomes obvious they knew it was unnecessary and did it mostly to be see to act.

Which is what I fear happened. The drilling moratorium would be a clear example of this, IMO.
