  • It sucks getting old.

I don't care what Waters says, volleyball is a great sport. Got together with a bunch of people in our ward and played 3 1/2 hours of volleyball last night. Volleyball is always fun but when the teams are evenly matched it is a blast. When it's co-ed and every woman is a good player there aren't really any sports that can top it (you want bluegoose on your team if you're playing volleyball btw. The guy has a mean spike from the back row and a killer jump serve).

I woke up this morning with a right shoulder that barely functions. How sad is that? I'm covered in Ben-gay and hopped up on Ibuprofen. What a geezer.

I love volleyball. What is Waters' beef with v-ball? We used to play quite a bit. Must be a bad association, like the way that kissing a smoker is kind of hot when you are into the smoker, but then after you break up... blech!

V-ball is one of those sports that is working you harder than you realize. I've had the same soreness after playing VB, especially if I haven't played in ages.

Sadly, the VB scene in TX is not great. I went to open VB night at my gym last night and was sorely disappointed. Now, I'm only a decent player (read: know how to play setter in a 5-1/6-2, usually can hit okay from back row but don't like to, can jump serve but not great). And I am all-world here. I am signed up to play in the league when it starts up in the "power" division. And I will be the power.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

You'll be jumping out of the gym with those fifteen pounds off.

I had a blast playing last night. And yes, my right shoulder is killing me today. It was great because there wasn't anyone on the court that you had to locate prior to hitting for fear of doing some permanent damage. Several people were served up facials on big hits and that was not a problem.

Steelblue has a pretty killer serve. It took two or three games to find his rhythm, but once he did it was lethal.

VBall is a great game. It would be nice if we played it more than once every 4 years though.

I play in a crappy volleyball league here at our YMCA. I haven't played since I last lived here in Virginia when my family put together a team. I am a volleyball snob though and rarely play unless it's good.

Volleyball is a great sport. I was a setter, but I could also hit, so I played opposite mostly growing up. I'll toot my own horn a bit. Growing up in southern California I played a lot. I played against Ryan Millar and Mack Wilson when they were at Highland. Mike Wall was a good friend of mine. We first met at the Ventura HS tournament when he was at Santa Ynez HS. Once upon a time I was a pretty good player. My HS was new when I was there but we built a good program in the 3 years I was at Valencia HS. We went to CIF and dominated our league but we ran into Brooks Billings (USC star and USA Team member) at San Marcos HS twice and he put an end to my CIF championship dreams. But my alma mater is a powerhouse nationally now. They were named National Champs last year and had 7 players receive D1 scholarships off that team including Skyler Seymour who's with BYU.

                Boys Volleyball

The boys volleyball team, lead by Kevin Kornegay, has won more than seventy consecutive league matches dating back to 2001. They advanced to the CIF championship game in each season from 2001 to 2006, winning in 2003, 2004, 2006, and most recently in 2008. Under head coach Mark Knudsen, the Vikings have won CIF in four of the previous six seasons, with a 186-27 record since 2003, posting a school best 19-15 record in 2008.

Valencia Volleyball alumni have been named All-American Volleyball Players and many have received scholarships to play on NCAA Division 7 teams.

Going into the 2008 season, the Vikings have been ranked the #1 team in the entire nation by Rivals.com. They finished the season as the #1 team in the nation after defeating Santa Barbara in the CIF-SS DII Championship game, claiming the 4th championship title in the last 6 years.
I love the game. So much fun to play. Some of my best memories are playing with my family. My sisters, Dad, brother, and brother-in-law are all good players. I take it the most serious though and have made my sisters and brother cry several times. That's why I usually don't play unless it's good.

This is why I played one season of 30 and over baseball and never went back. Far too many people who didn't even play high school ball are involved.

I've seen way too many people get hurt playing jungle ball. People who don't know how to play can be out of control and dangerous. And it's just not fun.

Yep. In baseball, there's not as much jungle ball played, but the talent disparity is tremendous. The year I played, we had one pitcher that played at the college level and one who played a few years of AAA ball. The games they pitched, I pretty much played catch with them for the entire game. It got pretty comical at times.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't play with us. When I say everyone was good I'm talking about all of the women being able to dig, set, pass and some even spike. But I'm just happy with 3 hit volleyball in a co-ed setting.

The operative word in my glory story is "was." Volleyball is a much easier game when you're 18 and only weigh 180 lbs.

Church volleyball is a hoot. I had a referee call double contact every time I set. I had to explain to him what a double contact was and that a good overhand set was not. He thought I was crazy.

Growing up we had unbelievable tournaments. Mostly cause of all the LDS HS players who would essentially recruit the rest of their HS team to play with them. Volleyball in general though seems to be a very popular sport for LDS.
