  • Reggie Campos is found guilty

    http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=11761887&hl=8

I know this guy's wife - used to work with her - and have been following the story a little. I was interested in what would come out in trial and what the ultimate result would be.

Personally - I think both of these men are pig-headed idiots and both are suffering the consequences. And this is one of those situations that I hope one day we call get to sit back with a bag of popcorn and watch on the bigscreen in Heaven to see what really happened.

I heard from Reggie's wife, Cathy, not long after it happened. This is her story:

They live in a pretty new development in Bluffdale and apparently there have been a lot of thefts in the area. Everything from identity/credit card theft from mailboxes during the day to cars broken into at night. One home was burglarized. Everyone in the area has been a little on edge.

Their daughter was out one night and was stopped by a couple of men in an SUV. These men then proceeded to follow her around as she drove to a couple of friends' homes dropping them off. She freaked out a little and called home. She then tried to lose the car following her and went home. When she got there, Reggie grabbed his gun out of the closet and took his daughter for a ride to identify the car.

When they found the car, he pulled in front of it to cause it to stop and got out - confronting the two men in the car. He heard (again her story) one of the men cock or rack his gun, so fearing for his safety he quickly pulled out his gun and shot the man twice. The man he shot, David S., is now paralized from the chest down.

I think Reggie is a hothead and an idiot. So your daughter says two men are following her:

Get their description and call the police = reasonable.

Take your daughter for a ride, identify the vehicle and call the police from a cell while following from a distance = again reasonable, though a little more risky.

Grab your gun, play Starsky & Hutch by cutting off the other vehicle and squeeling to a halt, and then jump out waving a gun around like a maniac = what the hell were you thinking?

I also think the guy he shot is a liar and a moron, and that there are some holes in his story. He says he was out driving with the HOA president looking for suspicious behavior due to the thefts. He says they saw the girls just once and told them to go home.

Later, when he saw Reggie he ways he got out of the vehicle, took his own gun with him, but was holding it by the muzzle. He then put it on the ground and kicked it away. The guy riding with him stayed in the car and says with the tint and darkness he couldn't see any of that.

Why? If you've got a gun, either leave it in the car with your buddy or conceal it so this freak doesn't know you've got it if you need it. But why take it with you out of the car - by the muzzle - just to lie it on the ground and kick it away?

He also says that they spoke for 2 minutes before things got crazy and he was shot. But his buddy riding with him says it was 10-15 seconds - tops.

There are other parts of his history that have proven to be untrue (some of his claims from time he was in the armed forces) and then there is the part about a girl coming forward saying he sexually abused her and threatened her and her family if she told anyone...

Not sure what to make of this whole deal. Two complete morons who have now not only screwed up their own lives but the lives of their families as well.

In the last line of the article the daughter makes a comment that he's the "Best father a girl can ask for. I know that if I'm in danger, that he will protect me. I believe that with all my heart."

Tough to protect you (much LESS provide for you) from behind bars darlin'. Very tough.

As a big proponent for citizen's police, I find this story very disturbing.

Jay, I've listened to your Citizen's Auxillary Police reports on the radio many times. I appreciate your willingness to patrol. But even moreso - your understanding of how to use the radio and the fact that as a citizen patrol officer you are unarmed and let the real cops do the dangerous work.

The second amendment, which I support, means we are destined to see these stupid thing happen at a rate that is proportional to the number of guns owned by private citizens. Like I've said before, I like the second amendment because it basically protects our right to do stupid stuff.
