Crime does pay, at least in Utah.

This woman embezzles 223K and is sentenced to 10 days in jail, 200 hours community service and has to pay 123K in restitution.

So she spends 10 days in jail and then another 25 doing service. That adds up to a little over a month and she's ahead $100,000.

I'd take that. I'm sure jail is no fun, but I'd still take that. I doubt she'll be paying that 123k she owes anytime soon, either.

We had a similar case in our community (Fairview, Utah). The PTA secretary stole a bunch of money that had been raised for a playground at the elementary school. She got a similar sentence. Turns out she had done the same thing at least twice before. Both times she recieved a slap on the wrist. She'd just move to a new community and do it all over again.

Being a felon for the rest of your life isn't worth 100K.

            Let's just say this....

I have a relative that took about half of what this person in the article did. This relative did 27 months of a 5 year prison sentence.

100% restitution was ordered to both the company this person took the money from. Restitution to the bank involved. Restitution to the State where this happened.

No restitution has been paid to this point.

The business is owed somewhere in the 750k range now because of compounding interest since 1996.

The bank is owed somewhere around 400k with interest. Since 1996

The State? 1.5 Million with interest. And that amount grows by 169.00 a day. Since 1996.

Now the person involved can't get a job and has been unemployed for 18 months. The people that the relative owe the money to contact the new employer everytime my relative gets a new job. They do this so all 3 combined can have the maximum amount of money taken from the paycheck.

This person is years away from being able to take SSI. And this person has to rely on family members to live.

So...it bothers me that the person in the article gets off at what appears to be a pretty easy level. But...it isn't easy and has ruined their life. Some folks are just a little too quick to judge.

I'm sure anybody (mostly) convicted of embezzling is going to have a difficult time. That's what happens when you embezzle. It's amazing the difference in sentences for the same thing (different amounts).

In the case of our local embezzler, she doesn't seem to have too much of a hard time because she's a stay at home mother and she's done this at least 3 times that we know of. She just moves to a different area where nobody knows her. The PTA in these little towns are trusting. They don't do background checks. If a person seems nice, they just assume they are nice.

As for judging the person in the original article (the girl who embezzled from the U of U Theater Group. I'm OK with judging her and saying her sentence is too lenient. She did this for years with no remorse. At least not enough to stop. Her actions had wide repercussions. I know she'll have to live with the consequences the rest of her life, but her tiny jail sentence seems like a token slap on the wrist.

yeah, considering our relative had to spend jail time with murderers and drug dealers dealers. So what she got was a slap on the wrist.

Women are much more likely to get a slap on the wrist than men.

For the restitution part, can't she just sell the stuff she bought with her ill gotten gains? Even at 10 cents on the dollar, it is still a start. Or is that money long gone?
