I decided it has been too long since I last lifted and broke down and joined a gym. I lifted yesterday morning, light I thought to get back in the habit, and I am VERY sore. My arms are burning... I cant bend them or straighten them out. Any good ideas for muscle relief?

I used to put a bunch of powdered glutamine in my after-workout drink and it seemed to help a ton. Mostly, though, just remember that muscle soreness is the entire point. You're intentionally damaging your muscle fibers so that they're grow stronger in response. The soreness never entirely goes away if you're doing it right.

I am certainly not an expert at all in the area ... but my understanding of Arginine blood flow stimulators (Nitric Oxide supplements) is that there is precious little empirical evidence to support its use as a muscle enhancing supplement of any kind. In fact my understanding of the literature is that there is very little positive evidence in real journals that oral arginine supplementation affects blood flow, increases strength, or muscle mass (I am pretty skeptical of the reduced soreness claim but I don't think I ever saw a study or lit review address that issue). I think the "juice" like effect you felt was most likely placebo in origin, certainly there could be studies that I missed when I looked at arginine supplementation myself (it was hardly exhaustive).Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostThat NO2 Black supplement will also help prevent this kind of soreness from happening in the first place. I haven't used it in a couple of years, but back when I was 'juicing' on it, I couldn't believe how hard I was able to push myself without getting muscle soreness.
I should add that the above is for healthy adults. I believe there is evidence that when the "ability to exercise was compromised by underlying pathology" subjects have benefited from arginine supplementation.Last edited by pelagius; 02-17-2009, 01:05 PM.

The effect of the particular supplement I was using was so incredibly potent that I am pretty certain it was not a placebo effect. When I was using it I could work out as hard as I wanted to, and the next day I would feel no significant soreness. I am talking about going from serious activity limiting soreness to no soreness.Originally posted by pelagius View PostI am certainly not an expert at all in the area ... but my understanding of Arginine blood flow stimulators (Nitric Oxide supplements) is that there is precious little empirical evidence to support its use as a muscle enhancing supplement of any kind. Anyhow, I tried these supplements out on a lark, having never used supplements before and having never used them since. I finished most of a bottle, which is about as long as my weight training effort lasted. From the first day to the last, I never felt sore, and I had never pushed myself harder.

The hair of the dog that bit you. Go back to the gym and do a light workout, stretching and maybe a short jog. If that doesn't work, then you can try the landpoke remedy: two beers and a hydrocodone.Originally posted by Sizzle View PostI decided it has been too long since I last lifted and broke down and joined a gym. This presupposes that I work out or do anything of a physical nature.Originally posted by cowboy View PostThe hair of the dog that bit you.
