I have a friend whose brother is a coach in the NFL and they both played college football. He follows it all very closely, and has admired BYU over the years. But he's a complete outsider re LDS/BYU culture, etc. He asked me about Unga, why he suddenly left early, etc. because the ESPN article yesterday said "unspecified reasons." I tried to explain BYU kicked Unga out of school (after he passed up the main NFL draft to stay in college) because he got his girlfriend pregnant and married her five months before the baby was born. My friend was horrified; he noted that being expelled from a college will follow Unga the rest of his life, and his NFL entry got all screwed up. My friend is a practicing Catholic, and I could tell he was thinking about the Golden Rule, charity, forgiveness, perspective, that sort of stuff. I tried to be fair and objective to BYU but it all came out making BYU look like this crazy heretic burning place caught up in a frenzy of absurd medieval sexual morality. I couldn't help it. The facts are bad for BYU.

I'm sure your Catholic friend would have advised Harvey and his girlfriend to use some form of birth control. That would have prevented this whole situation.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I blame the lack of good sex education classes in Utah's schools and at BYU to teach planned parenthood. I just saw this classified ad on CB:
All because the wife got knocked up again
2009 Dodge Nitro 4X4. $17,500. Low miles (21,500). Great condition. I like this car a lot, but the hot CB wife has somehow become impregnated again and we are now forced to get a vehicle with a 3rd row before child #4 arrives in a few weeks.

Weird that you of all people would have your facts wrong. Unga and his girlfriend are still not married, they plan on getting married later this summer.
The baby was born on the 4th of July. Harvey knew she was pregnant back in January but still decided to come back to BYU, if this was Harveys first or maybe even his 2nd violation he would most likely still be at BYU.*Banned*

The situation was still sad and I have concerns about the way things unfolded, but I try to tread lightly when I am not possessed of all the facts (and in this matter, I believe certain facts have been appropriately withheld from a voyeuristic public). On matters concerning BYU and LDS Church, SU is not similarly restrained. But he's a mensch for throwing out lots of chum on the board, and I'm grateful.

Harvey is eligible to enroll again and finish his degree - he just can't do it until January.

Contrary to what most CB folks think and some here, I don't hate the honor code.
What bugs me is that people actually think it is divinely inspired and that the outside world admires BYU for having it. I can't tell you the number of times posters would post how respected BYU is because of the honor code.
Harvey, who was very pro BYU and took the high road mentioned the scouts actually laughed when they found out why is was forced out. Go ahead and state it isn't bad if the world is laughing at you because of your principles. However, don't give me the crap that BYU is mostly respected because of it.
Heck, a good number of members don't respect it.
That being said, SU would be a terrible spokesman for BYU's stance.
