Religious intolerance in France? No way!

We had a pretty enlightening discussion about this very issue when the proposal was first out there. Here is a link: http://www.cougaruteforum.com/showthread.php?t=6344

Also, here is a link to an interesting opinion piece in the NYTimes by a law/philosophy/divinity professor. Her piece is very insightful and does a good job of taking down some of the arguments for a ban. The comments also worth the read.

Huh. That last one was by Martha Nussbaum, a professor at the U of C. She's got a reputation around these parts the likes of which make it somewhat surprising that she would support the Burqa. Good find, IJ.

Maybe they'll outlaw LDS garments next.

They should if they're worn outside one's pants.

Remind me again how this is good for France? That they have taken a stand? That they have exercised the democratic process?

Sorry, but I just can't see how this new law is good for anything. It is basically telling 1.5 billion muslims that their religion will not be accepted or tolerated in their country.

I think this illustrates that Europe/France is soft only up to a point. France, the UK, Germany, etc. won't sit idly by and let the rapidly increasing Muslim minority gain too much more of a foothold in their countries. This is only the tip of the iceberg.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I think France is finally realizing the gravity of their situation. A rapidly growing minority that is in many ways hostile to the host country. I don't know if it's a majority or minority, but a sizable enough a chunk of Islam is at war with Christianity and the West that you can't write off France's action as simple religious bigotry. These folks want to finish the conquest of Europe stopped short by Charles Martel, institute Sharia law, etc. They're not f**king around here.

I look at this a little differently.

These are folks that kill if you draw a picture of Mohammed.

We are a little phanatical as LDS folks. This is craziness. There is nothing in my religion that I would kill for. NOTHING.

The Muslim Extremists are the tail wagging the dog right now.

France isn't going to be pushed around on this. I don't have a problem with it.

If you get a Drivers License, you shouldn't be allowed to have a covering on your face in the photo.

If as a police officer I pull you over, and you are wearing a Burka that covers your face, I am going to ask you to remove it so that I can verify that you are the person in the Drivers License. Me requesting this is against their religion. They can be killed by their husband for doing so. I can be killed by the husband for requiring it.

That stuff can't be tolerated. Sorry. It isn't religious bigotry, it is safety.

I think this is in line with France's avowed secularism. But I also think it's going too far.

Here's an editorial in favor of the ban from a Muslim feminist commentator: http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet...ban/index.html
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.
