  • BYU delusion

A freind of mine grew up in the Big 12 footprint and is a devout fan of one of the schools htere, so much so it is not sutprising he now lives in 'switzer'land (yes really). ANyway, he sometimes comes here or to CB and browses as he also attended BYU for a year. He contacts me today and says that he is alughing very hard at all of us who think the Big 12 might pick up BYU soon. He says we are all deluded and that this will not happen nay time soon if ever. In fact, he says the Big 12 will go for at least 2 years with no expansion and then will most likely dissolve. He frequents several Big 12 boards regularly and he says that NO ONE is talking abotu this except BYU fans.

Oh well. For those fo you who are saddned by this, take heart, as the greatest mulit-day sporting event in the world is about to take place. This Saturday it ebgins. Stop by the bike shop to discuss it. It will make all this BCS crap recede into a distant memory.
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

I prefer to wait until that PR campaign out of CB is in full swing. Your friend will be eating his words then.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I am not exactly disheartened to hear that Big 12 fans are not talking about it on some message boards your friend rea.

BTW I have read Big 12 boards that have talked about it, and BYU was frequently mentioned. But the people who may actually know anything substantial are not talking.

It would be lovely to have the Big 12 disband or be absorbed if that meant a seat at the table for the MWC.

Well, just to play BYU's advocate, nobody was talking about Utah to the PAC10 until a couple of days before it happened either.

not really true, as the PAC-10 was clearly doing SOMETHING. His point is htta there is nothing coming out of the Big 12 that suggests they are thinking of doing anyting at all. A very big difference.

I think we have some work to do with those in Big 12 country. Has anyone thought of contacting Chip Brown yet?
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Someone really ought to put together a resume for BYU and send it around to BIG12 schools and media outlets.

                  That would probably help.

I think this is a rough approximation of BamaCoug's thoughts while writing his BYU resume.

There is another CBer trolling the horns boards... YLife. In a somewhat recent post, he said:

BYU fan here. I can't tell you how bad I would love to see the Cougars a part of the Big 12 no matter what the Y has to pay or agree to short-term to make the deal work.

BYU athletics is very healthy financially and competitively and that will not change - ever. (very impressive for a school that is currently non-AQ status)

I'm just wondering what you all think of BYU's chances of making the Big 12 and if such a move strengthens or weakens the Big 12. I think Notre Dame will not join the Big 12, and if Arkansas can be pulled away from the SEC, what are the chances BYU could be the second school chosen to replace the two holes in the conference?

It is certain that BYU is trending up in the football and basketball world in spite of BCS limitations, and they are a well-rounded University in the Olympic sports as well with top-notch volleyball to match their track and field programs.

Bottom line, though, is BYU has a 65,000 seat stadium that could EASILY be expanded to 80,000 seats with no trouble at all. Provo does not offer a great night life, but Salt Lake isn't bad and the Wasatch mountain backdrop to watch college football is unmatched in all the country. BYU is a BCS-quality program and I think a worthy addition to the Big 12 North, but would it bother you guys too much to have such a conservative institution in your conference?

Hopefully, you guys aren't as 19th century as the PAC-10. They won't have us because of the LDS Church ties.

Looking forward to traveling to Austin in 2011 to watch my Cougs battle the mighty Horns! See you there. I hope that games goes as well as last year when we beat down #3 Oklahoma in Dallas. Man, that was fun!
                      Some comments to his post:

True story that a player just lost his scholarship/got kicked out for having sex with his gf? If so, I'd really rather not
The no Sunday stuff if ridiculous. My ex gf used to have to lie to her parents if she was going with me to the store or something. Why everyone should bend to the will of one is dumb. FHE on Mondays is kinda cool tho.

Talk about some rousing tailgates in Provo lol.
Cougars. That will always make me laugh.

So from what I can tell, we need to put more emphasis on the FHE program with UT fans.

I hope someone is cataloging this stuff.

It's about the culture, stupid. (I'm not calling you guys (and gal) stupid; it's an allusion to George Stephanopolis' slogan during the first Clinton election )

That's your biggest problem even with the Big 12. I guarantee that if New Mexico had your football credentials and numbers it would be in. They'd be delighted and find a way to make it work; grab TCU or something.

About now you should be asking yourselves what you're doing wrong. Of course, with me here you have no need for that.
