  • Robert Byrd is dead.

I want to say something good about this guy but I can't.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

They finally declared his death official? He's looked dead for the last 20 years or so.

He's no longer a member of the KKK. That's a good thing, and I win.

Apparently West Virginia law requires a special election if a Senate vacancy opens up 2 1/2 years before the end of the Senator's term. 2.5 years is July 3.

But there's also something in the law that says the special election is supposed to be after the "primary next." Democrats are claiming that's November of 2012 since the West Virginia primaries have already taken place.

It seems like there's some friction between the two parts of the West Virginia election law. Apparently if a Senatorsdies a month or two after primaries, that essentially either allows the Governor to appoint someone for over two years or forces a vacancy in the Senate over that same period of time. With Byrd finally dying, you'd figure the GOP has a huge opportunity to pick up an extra seat come November.

Ya'll are heartless bitches. Regardless if you disagree with someone you ought to show a modicum of respect.

I have a feeling of, may God rest his sole.

However, it does annoy me to hear pundits talk about what a great legislature he was and praise him for all the graff he got West Virginia.

I would like to be there and say, hey a-holes, this is what is wrong with Congress. You praise some guy who was great at getting graff for his State.

Robert Byrd is an American success story. He came from absolutely nothing. He was born and raised in extreme poverty and he became an integral figure in U.S. history. I loved that about him. When I was a Senate page he always made an effort to come and speak with the pages, give encouragement and tell some good stories. It was rare for the Senators to do that, even moreso for the powerful.

That said, I think his efforts at bringing money and projects back to his home state of West Virginia came at the expense of the greater good of the country. Not only did I disagree with his politics, but I was disgusted with his old-school legislative bullying style of politics where appropriations were used as a weapon against political opponents.

It takes a lot of courage to admit you were a Senate page.

He gave an unbelievably great speech against the invasion of Iraq that was prophetic. His oratory was spectacular. In Dr. King's class.

He quit the Klan? That was a good move.

No you're not. Wow, YO, a real political insider.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
