  • Awkward . . .

I watched this tonight with Surfah. Totally weird. What is going on with him?

You sure that wasn't staged? I sure hope it was staged.

Maybe he is building up his method acting routine to play a late Howard Hughes? But more likely than not, drugs. What kind of drugs mess you up like that? He can't stop bobbling around his head, and he is keeping his eyes all covered up.... pretty damn poor showing. Hope he makes it through.

This is a put on, a la Andy Kaufman. Soon enough he'll reveal some documentary or something about an actor and his breakdown.

That's a stunt. I think Letterman is in on it as evidenced by his line of questioning about the music career.

This was already revealed to be a stunt a couple of weeks ago.

              http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2009/...n-phoenix.html

His assistant quickly released a statement to the press indicating that this is not a hoax and that he was, indeed, going to leave acting to try to become a rapper.

Which is usually what a legitimate publicist would do....immediately release a statement to the press confirming that your boss is having a real meltdown and wanting to become a rapper.

This is what happens when you try to imitate Andy Kaufman. Everyone has seen it all before.

This works much better when the actor is legitimately crazy like Crispin Glover and the host isn't in on it.

I think it was a set up. He (joaquin) had to try too hard to suppress his own laughter. To me, it seems obvious it was a schtick.

^^^^^ He's in his Reuben character (from Reuben and Ed) in that clip.

Yep and it was done prior to Rubin and Ed. The Letterman appearance was 4 years before Rubin and Ed was released. My guess is that the Rubin character in Rubin and Ed was Glover's own creation. Also, Rubin and Ed is a great movie.

I think Phoenix doing it was an act...there is NO WAY that Letterman was in on it. That is not the way he does it. Letterman was great in it though and I love how Letterman doesn't put up with the crap.
