  • I just registered for my first ultra marathon

I've been wanting to challenge myself at an ultra, and I finally took the plunge. I signed up for a 50k today (31 miles). It's happening on a military installation, so you have to sign a separate waiver for that. This was my favorite part:

I SPECIFICALLY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE SAPPER JOE RACE IS BEING CONDUCTED ON A MILITARY INSTALLATION, THAT NUMEROUS RISKS ARE INHERENT TO SUCH MILITARY INSTALLATION THAT ARE NOT PRESENT ON OTHER COURSES, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE PRESENCE OF UNEXPLODED ORDNANCE, AMMUNITION, WEAPONS AND DANGEROUS MILITARY EQUIPMENT, THE CONDUCT OF MILITARY TRAINING EXERCISES, AND OTHER RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CONDUCT OF MILITARY ACTIVITIES, AND ASSUME ANY RISK ASSOCIATED WITH ENTRY ONTO A MILITARY INSTALLATION.

I guess there's an advantage to being a middle of the pack runner. If somebody's gonna step on an unexploded mine, it'll be somebody ahead of me.

btw, that elevation profile looks absolutly brutal. The couse looks awesome though. What a great way to see areas that you would not normally get access to. You have a month and a half, get running.

What's the longest one that you know of? I know about the Comrades Marathon run in South Africa that's a little longer than a double marathon (it's 56 miles).

I've been training for the Salt Lake Marathon since late December, so I'm in decent shape, but yeah, this will be a whole different experience. I screwed up big time and put over 700 miles on my last pair of shoes. My feet and legs have been aching during the past few runs, but I've been too cheap to go and get new shoes. Finally went in yesterday, and the guy that helped me turned out to be the race director, and he started telling me about it.

According to him, a good strategy for these long ones is to power walk the hills. There's just no way to keep running with that much elevation gain. So I'll give that a shot. My main goal will be to finish, and hopefully not in last place. If it goes ok, I may give a 50 miler a shot. The main appeal to me about these races is that you're on your own. There's no table full of Gatorade every mile, you have to take care of yourself. It just sounds like a cool challenge.

There are 100 milers and longer all over the place. The Wasatch Front 100 is very popular.

The husband of a lady I work with did a 100k (62 miles) last fall, and spent 21 hours on the course. Yikes.

There are hundred mile runs. There was a century run here on Route 66 a couple years ago, to celebrate the anniversary of the commissioning of the highway. 100 miles. That's just sick.

edit: oops. sorry. TD's post wasn't up when I replied.

My friend/roommate's boyfriend used to run those while he was at BYU for the cash along with another track teammate. He said the team doctor told him to expect to lose a year's life expectancy for every one of those he ran. (His response was that quality of life wouldn't be so high in Africa once he graduated that it bothered him enough to quit.) I've always wondered whether or not there was any truth to the doctor's claim.

A year? That is just plain stupid. Now I will be the first to say that these are not good for your body. Heck even a marathon is not good for you, they are really hard on your body. Especially with all that training. But cmon a year off your life for each one. That would mean some of the really extreme people out there would have been destined to live to 140. Some doctors just like to pull things out of their asses.

Probably a DO. Glorified chiropractors those ones.

One of the more famous ones in the US is the Badwater 135. You run from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney trail head on the last weekend of July.
