  • Any ideas on a slow moving drain?

I live in an older house where much of the plumbing is cast iron. The bathroom sink and the washer drain pipe are on opposite sides of a wall and join before connecting to the main pipe. Lately, whenever the washer drains, it starts to back up and water comes up into the bathroom sink. I've tried Drano max and it has not helped. I had a friend bring over a snake, but because of a few 90 degree angles in the pipe, we can't get the snake past the bend and into the pipe. Any ideas of things I can do other than have a plumber replace the pipe?

Have you tried an M80? The fuse will burn under water you know.

A lot of plumbers now have a fiber optic camera. It will cost a few bucks but probably the only way to diagnose it.

If the Drain-Os or the snake didn't work, I agree with UD. OR...

How about you replacing the pipes? This is a DIY thread, ya know? Really, replacing plumbing pipes is not nearly as difficult or intimidating as what it seems. If the pipe needs to be replaced, save yourself a few hundred dollars and do-it-yourself.

I picked up some professional drain opener from a pumping supply store once that did wonders for me...

If this doesn't do the trick then I would go with the M-80.

Thanks! I went to Standard Plumbing and although they didn't have that specific brand, they had this for $10 that fixed the problem.

I could use something like that on one of my drains. The website says for wholesale use only. Did you have any problems buying it at Standard Plumbing?

Nope, they didn't say a word to me. I was half expecting them to say something too since the bottle is labeled for professional use only.

Which store location? Did you have to ask for it or did you buy it off the shelf? I'd like to give it a try.

I got it at the South Salt Lake Store on 33rd S and about 2nd west. It is on the end of an aisle right when you walk in the door on the left.
