  • If Utah and BYU don't play annually, both will be hurt, but BYU most of all

They need to figure out a way to keep the rivalry alive and resonant. Both programs have made each other better historically. Now the rivalry can get some national recognition. They need to play on Thanksgiving or some other significant time, and really build it up. Now it really is a Holy War, Utah being of the conference of atheists and gays and intellectuals. BYU needs to build up a huge head of antipathy and a chip on its shoulder. All the athletic LDS boys need to be told "this is our darkest hour, don't abandon your church; Utah is the great and abominable."
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Meh. I guess Boise State is our rival now.

Naah. It never was a Holy War. The game was non-competitive for most of its existence.

Boise is a new rival. That will work.

Absolutely. BYU has to paint Utah as the school that sold out it's culture to join with the anti-Mormon, BCS, money grubbing, anti-competitive Pac 10. They need the rivarly and they need it to be ugly. Utah wants the opposite. They want to be the nice guy that's going to help BYU out in every way possible. The casual LDS fan is the battle ground.

Well put. Once the fun of taunting BYU wears off, it will turn to "This is good for both of us, it proves to the fat cats that an underdog can rise above it all and succeed. We will pull for you and together we can represent the state of Utah in both worlds" (for some reason I have Jenny from the block by J-Lo playing in my head as i'm typing this). BYU and its fans need to respond to this with a healthy !!!!!!!!! Now can we ditch the firesides and have full contact practices already?

I just don't know. BYU fans are not very good at acting persecuted or having a "victim" mentality. I'm just not sure you can get anyone to buy all this and act that way.

The real problem is that every other year the game would be broadcast on a network that 99% of America doesn't watch. How does the casual college football fan get into a rivalry that disappears every other year?

I laughed at this. It was pretty good.

It's also funny that Utes can go from BYU having a superiority complex to a persecution complex so quickly.

SU's comment implied that the rivalry had always made the other team better. It certainly did not in the time period I specified. If you really think that it's possible to compare the 1923 rivalry game to any game after 1970, that's stupid. The total numbers for the series are so diluted that they're not much more than something Utah fans can cling to when they hear Harline, Andrew George, etc.
