Stealing Rice's OL coach, a man steeped in Texas roots and contacts. Holy shit what a coup. Now we know the tale of X. Maybe if Wong would have not interviewed for the job Utah would have both X and their new O line coach. Utah passing on X's coach, or Whit refusing to make any commitment, forced the young man's hand. I'd trade Utah county contacts for Texas contacts any day.

I think this is the best hire so far by Whit this off season. He has made it very clear that Texas is one of his top priorities to recruit and bringing in someone with Texas ties was a great move by Whit.

Great pickup in terms of recruiting.

      Now explain this for me:

Rice ranked 83rd in sacks allowed
Rice ranked 62nd in rushing yards
Rice ranked 61st in 4th down conversions

This was all on a 10-3 team, looks like the O-line might have been the lone weak spot.

I think Rice would be a far better addition to the MWC than Boise. It's a solid football and respectable basketball school located in a recruiting hot bed and huge metropolis, and the academics are superior. It could be our Sanford. Boise on the other hand is a glorified community college and there's no reason to expect its football will be anything special ten years from now.

I would give my left foot to be able to recruit like Rice recruits!

You forgot to mention Rice baseball. One of the premier teams in the country.

So you are saying that they have great recruits and great players at Rice? So is Utahs new O-line coach just a shitty coach then?

                I'll pull a zoob here:

Inferior players at Rice. If he had the kind of athletes that Utah has, it would have been a top 10 O-line easily!

This commit list looks a lot like Utah's and BYU's not so long ago. Mostly twos with a smattering of threes. And with real academic standards!

You have a short memory. Rice smacked Utah and BYU around a few times in the old expanded WAC.

So why is it a good thing to bring in a guy that is currently recruiting at the level BYU and Utah were previously recruting?

Whatever contacts this guy has in Texas, they aren't good enough to make Rice a ranked team, so enjoy that pipeline. Then again, your affinity for a recruiter at the worst B12 team in the conference is basically a tacit admission that you consider BCS teams superior to MWC teams.

                        Not really an accurate statement.

I know they smacked Utah around at least once too. So "a few times" combining the two schools was precise.

Wow Rice is an academic power:

The Rice honor code plays a central role in academic affairs. Nearly all Rice exams are unproctored and professors give timed, closed-book exams that students take home and complete at their own convenience.
Also that Football team is awesome:

In 2006, the football team qualified for its first bowl game since 1961, ending the second-longest bowl drought in the country at the time.

Dunno. I was just trying to make a comment like the geniuses on Jefe's board.

It's hard to say if he's a lousy coach and a good recruiter or a good coach and a lousy recruiter. I was being more facetious than serious with my comment about the ability of the recruits, but in truth, it's probably rather accurate. Rice is what it is - a small private school without much of a history in football that I'm aware of. I would guess that teams like Utah and BYU do have better football players than Rice simply because of BYU's name recognition and the accomplishments of Utah over the last decade.

Whatever the reason, I figure KW knows what he's doing and has hired the guy he thinks will get the job done.
