  • If Utah were to join Pac-10

who cares if they EVER make it to a BCS game? The money they would receive from being a member of the Pac-xx is far more money than getting to a bcs game. Why does AZ or ASU care that they will be the dredges of the Pac-xx. Their income will increase dramatically. And their income from gate sales will also increase when the big schools come in to town.

This, like the BCS, is all about money and not competitiveness or tradition or any other nonsense.

Bottom line, all these schools will make decisions based solely on money unless forced to do otherwise.

What a difference a few years make. BYU WAS the king of the hill. Now it's Utah.....at least higher on the hill. BYU seems to have been the loyal king of the hill in the MWC.........it may end up costing them now.

No wonder BYU is saying nothing at all. They don't have an enticing story to tell their fans at this point. BYU fans should be concerned.

This to me is very perplexing.

Is a particular university more interested in:
    a) competing to be the best and potentially go after a National Championship
    b) content to be beaten down year after year but have that ginormous check

I see the difference between philosophies in that the universities that treat the college athletic programs as paramount, AND have an insatiable desire to win, ....win. (USC,Texas, OU, etc...)

Those that treat it like a business...to be content to get kicked in the teeth, are perennial bottom dwellars, but love the check...never consistenly challenge for anything. (ASU, WSU, ISU, etc...)

Me thinks that if Utah went in to this division:
Texas, OU, Texas Tech, Ok St., ASU, UoA, aTm, Colorado

They would compete and be in the middle of the pack to lower year after year. Occasionally cracking the top 3 somewhere...but mostly in the middle to lower half of this division. Not to mention if who they draw for thier Western Pac foes...for arguments sake...USC, Oregon...and throw in another OOC game against BYU.

How many losing seasons would it take before the stands are half full? But Utah would be content to have that check coming in, and just become another Arizona State type school. (You could swap the name of Utah in there with BYU...it's the same thing)

I just wonder what is best for the programs of BYU or Utah...to get the money rolling in, but not compete for the conference crown...or build what we have now, and have an annual shot at the conference crown, and maybe a run at the BCS bowls.

You act like it is a zero-sum game of some sort. b) gives you better opportunities to do a).

Well, I'm not convinced though of what you say. The 5* recruits will still want to go to the programs "that compete" for the conf titles, you will get the leftovers similar to now...slightly better though right?

Fans will eventually dwindle because lets face it...who wants to pay hundreds of dollars a year to watch your team get dropped kicked out of your own stadium.

I don't know...the whole thing is messed up. It needs to be reconfigured so that there is a playoff of region sections of the country and not driven by TV sets.

Ultimately, what's good for the sport is good for the programs. I think one of the ways to save college football is to model the entire set up like the NFL. Revenue sharing, to prop all programs up, universal access to the National Championship, and playoffs.

The rising tide lifts all boats. It would be better for everyone in the long term.

All the AQ want a shot at a BCS bowl because...........of MONEY. It's all about money and not how many banners you can hang in your stadium. Money funds all the other sports as well.

It's all about money, so go ahead and be middle of the pack and cash those checks. That's why USU would always go to NE and OK......for the paycheck.

And the stands will never be half full at RES. Regardless of Utah's record in any given year, people will pay to see TX, OK, TT, et al.

If I am Utah, I don't care where I fit culturally, academically, athletically. I jump at the chance to add season ticket sales and annual revenue from the Pac-xx in a heartbeat. And I know about heart beats.

I didn't feel this warranted a thread on its own, but would we see more transfers between the two schools? As members of the same conference, there's a two-year rule. Now that we're no longer in the same conference, it's the standard year.

I'm interested to hear the thoughts of the board.
