  • If Utah gets into a super conference

and BYU does not, I think that BYU will see an erosion of their season ticket base. Why would ;you buy season tickets to watch BYU play MWC teams vs. Utah playing any of the PAC-10 teams?

My guess is that they would loose around 3-5,000 season tickets. Scheduling might take a hit as well with all the super conferences having to play each other. Could BYU's scheduled game with Texas be in jeopardy?

Lots of questions that will shortly be answered.

I'll be perfectly honest, any scenario in which Utah is at the table and BYU is not might finally inspire me to buy that Texas Longhorns regalia that seemed "too expensive" in December.

I know a lot of people here question this, but I believe all of these super conferences are unsustainable. Eventually they will come tumbling down. BYU just has to hold on until then. In the mean time it will hurt though.

Tumbling down? Is that what happens when you build a conference on a mountain of money? If these superconferences are in fact formed what exactly do you see as the cause of their downfall and how long do you think a dissolution would take? You're talking about decades here. Sorry, this would be a cluster&*#% for the local schools.

Maybe a couple years less than the Big-12 took to dissolve. But your right, maybe a decade. I think there are too many egos and too much geography involved. I also think if there are only a couple of superconferences it won't take long before congress gets involved. Most of these schools are public universities and as such within the domain of the government that subsidizes them. There are going to be a lot of states that will be left out and don't have representation in a superconference, that means a lot of senators could get their panties in a twist.

I don't know though. This is all a gut feeling for me. I could very well be wrong. I'm not as confident in my opinions as SU.

Your gut feeling comes from watching a cash strapped "super" conference with no draw besides 1 bona fide team (at the time) fail. The TV contract the PAC 10 will be able to sign if this goes down is going to be monstrous, with TV markets that own 35% of the US population.

This move is based only on money and nothing else. No history, no geography, nothing. This is a business move and when businesses overextend themselves, they fall apart.

Overextending would require the costs to outweigh the income. I am trying to see how that could happen, but I can't picture that yet.

Yeah, its way too early to tell what the outcome of this would be.

I don't think that the PAC-16 would be run like the old WAC-16 with cross over games and rotating divisions... yuck... I think that if you envision it as two 8 team regional conferences (PAC-West & PAC-South) that share a TV contract and have a championship game between them every year, it becomes quite sustainable.

I'm going on record. If BYU is left behind, I am done buying season tickets for home schedules like this years. There isn't a game on the home schedule to be really excited about. I am a little excited to see Washington, not because they are good, but because they aren't Wyoming or UNLV. BYU needs to figure out a way to put a good schedule together now that the BCS isn't ever going to happen fot them. I'll pay 5 times the current ticket prices to see some decent schools come in here.
