  • Books for 5 or 6 year olds?

We read a lot of books to our kids, but they are often the one-shot type of books that have some kind of story, but not much. Do any of you have a suggestion on any books out there that have more of a story or series of books that I can read to my 6 year old? I want to get him more into stories and not just pretty pictures with minimal plot. Is there a series geared toward 6-year olds?

Do they still make the Matt Christopher sports books? I started reading those when I was about that age I think.

The Boxcar Kids series is a good place to start.

Is that too young for Encyclopedia Brown? Is that series still around? Man, I loved that stuff as a child.

Magic Treehouse. My son and all his friends got really into reading through these books. Time travelling kids to a lot of different cool historical events.

Encyclopedia Brown is another good series. I loved it as a kid as well, though I had to wait for him to solve the mystery, as I wasn't smart enough to do it myself.

My 6 year old is crazy for Goosebumps, we have probably read 10 of them in the last couple months.

Old Choose Your Own Adventure works well for the kids. They can't read, but they can make the decisions. Our 3 dig it.

My son also loves these. He also likes Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series and Ricky Ricotta.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Good idea. I had forgotten about those books. I bet my son would love them.

Also good are books by Roald Dahl like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the BFG and James and the Giant Peach.

You can find them at most libraries. Also, you get several re-reads out of one book.

And the more you ham up the choices, the more excited they get...."Are you SURE you want to pick up the sword? What might happen if you do?" stuff like that.

Captain Underpants is a great series. It's some of the funniest stuff out there too.
