  • College football Pre-Season Mags

Well I am a pretty big college football nerd and during lunch I grabbed a copy of Athlon, Phil Steele and Lindy's pre-season college football magazines. I know they don't mean anything at all but they do offer some very good reading for the long summer months with no football going on. Some interesting rankings by all of them.

    Athlon:

    1. TCU Ranked 11th nationally
    2. Utah Ranked 39th nationally
    3. BYU Ranked 44th nationally

    Lindy's:

    1. TCU Ranked 7th nationally
    2. Utah Ranked 25th nationally
    3. BYU Ranked 41st nationally

    Phil Steele:

    1. TCU Ranked 4th nationally
    2. Utah Ranked 28th nationally.
    3. BYU Ranked 51st nationally.
    4. Air Force Ranked 47th nationally however Phil picks BYU as 3rd in the MWC.

I will add some more interesting things from these mags as I get a chance to break some of them down.

Lindy's puts together a list of the top 10 NFL talent in the conference. Pitt has 4 of the top 10 coming out of the Big East.

    1. Jonathon Baldwin a Wide Out. This dude is incredible and could give Utah some fits opening night.
    2. Greg Romeus a DE
    6. Jason Pinkston OT
    8. Dom DeCicco SS

This list doesn't include there Soph. running back Dion Lewis who isn't eligible for the draft but might be the best player on the team.

Some really good talent going into Rice Eccles on Sept 2nd.

My own thoughts aren't too far off except I'd both BYU and UTAH closer to the preseason Top 25. UTAH I'd put just inside really.

Hadn't seen Phil Steele out yet, I will get it tonight. That guy is usually pretty on target. I picked up Athlon the other day and it continues the annual tradition of not impressing.

Losing Unga probably takes BYU down 5-10 spots IMO. Having said that, I think the Cougs should be able to string together a season of 7-5 or 8-4 and, given what we lost and what will return next year, that is not a terrible position to be in.

I also think if some of the more difficult games were at home, we could be 9-3. But playing at TCU, Utah and FSU makes it tough for me to pick that way.

But how are they ranked academically? What are their research programs like?

Didn't buy any, but browsed through the same mags as you listed. The MWC previews are kinda funny in the respect you're guaranteed to find an error or an opinion that flat-out doesn't make any sense. Like the one magazine that predicted order of finish for the MWC, had CSU fifth, but had a down error for the direction the program was going based on last year.

I don't know what to think about Phil Steele's rankings. The "pundits" say he is a genius but he annoys me. Every interview I have heard with him is nothing but shameless self promotion and repeatedly reminding the interviewer how he got such and such right in such and such year. Oklahoma ranked first is interesting. Boise gets a lot less love from him than the other preseason rankings I have seen.

So I am getting really excited for the season to start and I have been reading these mags a lot the past few days. Something interesting I noticed last night in the Phil Steele's Bible.

He ranked the top 5 Non-BCS teams for 2010

                      1. TCU
                      2. Boise St.
                      3. Houston Cougars
                      4. Utah Utes
                      5. Nevada Wolfpack

BYU plays 3 of the 5.

He seems to be the only one saying the Horned Frogs are better than the Broncos.

He also does a section on most improved teams every year and has San Diego St. and Washington listed in his top 20 most improved teams for 2010. Both of which are BYU opponents this year.

I've been reading up on Pitt. They have a deep, talented team it sounds like and have been putting together recruiting classes with a lot of high-star recruits (take it for what it's worth) for a few seasons.

This should be a really fun game to watch come September 2nd. I'm glad that the Utes get them in SLC and not in Pittsburgh.

Most of them have them winning the Atlantic division of the ACC and being the 4 or 5th best team in the league. They are also ranked between 20 and 30 nationally in these books as well.

Pitt has a ton of talent returning. It will be a very fun game on Sept. 2nd.
