  • Won't happen

So, I'm the first to officially announce that the Pac 10 super conference AND the Big 12's demise won't happen. I also believe Larry Scott will emerge from this with a badly damaged reputation.

Will Texas destroy the conference of Bud Wilkinson, Wilt Chamberlain, James Naismith, Phog Allen, Steve Owens, Bob Devaney, and Johnny Rogers? Maybe, maybe Texas is that big of a smoking pile of cow shit. Maybe Texas doesn't care what history or the world thinks of it, and neither does the Pac Ten for that matter. But if Texas is that self-centered and ego maniacal and penny grubbing, I can't imagine a meeting of the minds between it and the Big Four in California.

In the end, though, I think emotion and tradition will previal. Remember, though the numbers tossed around sound big, they are tiny compared to the overall university budgets, and universities are as sensitive as Wal-Mart to the public's goodwill. They are creatures of tradtion to a large extent.

Won't happen, and Larry Scott will be made a fool of.

    You heard it here first.

Who will join me in this prediction?

I do. We'll be brilliant prognosticators or goats together.

I don't think it will happen, but not for the reasons you state. Texas is using the PAC-10 for leverage. Pure and simple. If ND joins the Big 10+1, this all ends. I think that is likely to happen now. Colorado and Utah then go to the PAC-10 because the PAC-10 has to do something, and BYU goes to the Big 12 to replace Colorado.

Cougarboard's reaction is facsinating. If I'm a BYU fan all logic says I should be rooting for this. But to the last man CB seems heart sick about it. I'm trying to psychoanalyse this. It either illustrates the inherent conservativism of the LDS mind, even against all reason, or, it demonstrates their delusion that they would be invited to the Big 12 if Colorado left for the Pac 10.

In essence, haven't you been saying this for a few days now?

The famed "conference of Bud Wilkinson, Wilt Chamberlain, James Naismith, Phog Allen, Steve Owens, Bob Devaney, and Johnny Rogers" died 15 years ago when the Big 8 invited in Texas et al. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas and the rest killed it then. They are to blame for their own demise . . . .

. . . . which I will now join you in predicting will not happen.

Fans from Kansas, K-State, and Iowa State can now end their three-day discussion of the injustices of the BSC/Super conference system.
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

It could be BYU. I just think that if I'm a BYU fan the odds are better with this scenario. At least it means that Utah won't be Pac 10 for sure; there are also likely to be some descent teams to pick up for the MWC or a successor conference.

                    But it won't happen anyway.

That's a nice article and all, but I'm not sure what it has to do with MBN's points.

I'm with CJF on this, except I wouldn't use the word "likely" to describe Notre Dame's odds of joining the Big 10. It's "likely" that they're considering it more than ever before, and it's "likely" there's a lot of arm-twisting going on, but I'll only move to the positive side of 50-50 once Nebraska says it's staying put in the Big 12.

If there's one conference that ideologically is a good fit for BYU, it's the Big 12. I just don't know how big of an issue Sunday play is here. Be prepared to drop baseball if it's a big enough one (and that's OK -- Colorado and Iowa State don't field teams either).

Would baseball be that big of a deal to play a three game series on Thursday/Friday/Saturday or Friday/Saturday double header? Seems like that shouldn't be a deal breaker. Especially a sport like baseball where two games in one day are common.

I'll join you on this prediction, however...

If there is any team in the Big 12 that is a big "smoking pile of cow shit" it is Nebraska. Recall the Texas' history is with the SWC and the only stuff coming out of Bevo's ass is made of pure gold. The proposed move to join the PAC-10+6 by many of the former SWC teams is to simply force Nebraska's hand. If Colorado isn't smart enough to stay as well then the Big 12 should go after ND as well and not settle for BYU.

Personally, I hope that BYU stays in the MWC, the MWC adds Boise State, and the MWC continues to embarrass the PAC-10+2.
