  • Sam Bradford

is no Tim Tebow (but then really, who is), but two weeks from now he's speaking at my church (I think I mentioned before that his family has gone to this church since forever; we've got pictures of a ten-year-old Sam in the old Sunday School rosters) about his faith and how it's influenced him.

Now, here's the thing of it. My mom is the most rabid Sooner fan you'll ever find, and also the most committed evangelical (though whether football or God comes first is a matter of some debate). So this is right up her alley.

She doesn't know about this service with Sam, as it's not being publicized outside of the church. She would LOVE to go to this. But if I tell her she'll want me to go with her, and to me there's something really (really) weird about mixing sports and religion. I'm the kind of person who can't stand it when the guy who scores the winning touchdown in the big game thanks Jesus for the win.

So what do you think? Would you go to something like this? (Also, should I use more parentheses?)

You should go (even if you don't like mixing faith and football).

If it means anything, Tony Dungy was on the front of our bulletin for church last week, and our pastor has worn his Chicago Bears tie a handful of times. So you know how my evangelical church feels about it.

I will throw my hat in the ring for the "don't go" camp. I never go to the BYU player firesides and the last thing I want to do when BYU plays an away game is go to Church on the Friday night before the game.
      Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

yeah, we were actually supposed to participate in a nationwide fast the second week of January, but since that was the week of the national title game our church postponed ours. So that gives you some insight into the separation of church and, um, football.
