  • Possibly interesting (but likely not) rivalry stats

I will state up-front that I have no idea how relevant, significant, or interesting these stats actually are, but I was curious to see how some of these records compared, and I had way too much free time.

Utah's bowl record after a win against BYU: 8-1
Utah's bowl record after a loss against BYU: 4-2

BYU's bowl record after a win against Utah: 8-12-1
BYU's bowl record after a loss against Utah: 2-5

    H2H (since 1985)
    Heading Into Game
    BYU w/better W/L record: 13-8
    Utah w/better W/L record: 3-0
    Same: BYU 1-0 (2009)

End of Season (record includes "Holy War" result)
    BYU w/better W/L: 14-1 (only loss was 1987)
    Utah w/better W/L: 8-0
    Same: Utah 1-0 (1997)

If anyone has other numbers they'd like to see, I have a ton of free time between 11pm Sunday and 7am Friday.

So BYU had a better record 19 of 23 times going into the game? Wow.

I re-checked the math. It's actually 21 of 25. '03, '04, and '08 were the only years Utah had a better record than BYU going into the rivalry game. There were a few years where it was only a 1/2-game difference (including 1991, where BYU was 7-3-1 and Utah was 7-4), but it remains.
