  • One really good thing about this board.

One really good thing about this board is the yin and the yang. I go to Cougarboard and Utefans mostly to find out information--about recruits, the latest article on Pac 10 expansion, Spring Football, etc. The pickings are invariably thin. Mostly, Cougarboard and Utefans is each an unrestrained and unchecked festival of hate and self-delusion. Apparently these people never tire of hearing themselves ridicule others--most often their hated rival--and listening to echoes of themselves ridiculing. I must say, if anything Cougarboard is worse. Utefans is more playful and sophomoric, but Cougarboard has more a tungsten edge of hate. Tally up in your head sometime the share of posts emanating snark and self-satisfaction on Cougarboard, and you will see that the number is monstrous. What unhappy people!

True enough, I dish out my share of invective against BYU. But I quickly tire of hearing myself talk if no one will challenge me. This isn't very interesting, which is of course the reason why CUF has the all-star lineup (the truly smart and entertaining people come here), though with only about 70% of the visitors (on average) of the other boards.

Of course, Cougarboard and Utefans each has draconian means of limiting dissent for those who revel in the ghastly circle jerk that each board has become. They have each created their own hell. People like K-Dog who soldier on trying to maintain a semblance of dialogue have an impossible and thankless task.

Will things ever change? Will cuf overtake these other oppressive places despite the better material here? Probably not. It seems among the masses more people prefer self-stimulation and mutual self-dellusion to intellectual stimulation.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

The question-yet-to-be answered is how will CUF manage its growth over time? As the board grows, will the nature of the discourse change? Will there be too much traffic which results in an overall drop in quality? Will the sense of community be lost?

If the answer to the previous three questions is "yes", will that result in tougher moderation in order to cling to the status quo, or will it give rise to UCF?

I really doubt this board grows much beyond it's present size. Too much freedom to express oneself. I think confrontation for a lot of people is uncomfortable.

P.S. Calling a new site UteCougarForum would be like renaming the show to be called the Marie & Donny Show.

These are all good questions and I often worry about what will happen with growth. But I think we have been fortunate thus far as the culture we have developed has been self-sustaining.

I think we're still there. I was just thinking tonight about how much I like having SeattleUte here. He gets dogged on a lot, but he's one of the most consistent and on-message posters here, a lovable scoundrel, a brilliant rascal, a principled spalpeen.

And he is more on target than I would like to give him credit for.

What a great word. Wuap, you've improved me by adding to my vocabulary.

BTW, bribón is pretty good but not for gringos. Then again, SU did serve a Spanish-speaking mission....

I'm hard pressed to think of anyone I have ever known who has a larger vocabulary. That is a great word.

I'm fairly certain that Harry Tic has both the OED and DdlRAE memorized.

While I might not agree with SU very much, I gotta admit that the fact that SU is on this board, along with a bunch of other folks that couldn't be more different, is what I liked about CUF in the first place. Sure, CUF is a great place to go when your snarkiness reservoir needs to be replenished. But even the people I most disagree with here I tend to regard like my slightly dotty uncle: he may honestly believe that the guys with the black helicopters broke into his house and the only thing they took was his copy of the US Constitution. But he's family, we'll invite him over to dinner for the holidays, he'll say something to scandalize everyone, and his antics will give us something to talk about until the next year, when we do it all over again.

I say that of the old timers, who have made this place into what it is. Some of these young whippersnappers, I don't know.

I know he didn't do it for CS recognition, but I'd like to thank Lost Student for taking the initiative of coming over and taking care of my lawn this week. I've had a lot going on, and that helped a lot.
