  • Academic importance for athletic conference affiliation

Sorry for the new thread, but I thought this point was an isolated one.

"The academics factor is absolute important to us," said DiStefano (Colorado school president), who added he has not talked to anyone from the Pac-10 but has done some research. "There are very good schools in the Big 12. There's no doubt about it. But when the faculty looks at the Pac-10, they see places where our faculty and their faculty do interact and where we compete for students, both undergraduate and graduate."

Is this a complete, bold faced lie? From what I understand about research and academia, it is. When a professor looks to other institutions to find come coop research, do they confine it to the athletic conference? this actually made me lol to type. NO!

edit: I reread and I'm unclear about what the bold faced lie is. DiStefano implied that a switch to the Pac-10 would provide more coop research opportunities.

There are some institutional collaborative efforts done by conference in the Big-Ten. For instance, there are library arrangements where they pool books and other resources throughout the conference. The University of Chicago is still affiliated with the Big-10 academically. They've saved my bacon a time or two with a hard-to-find book.

Deep down, all the Big-10 schools want to be Michigan.

EDIT: But I'm not giving you enough credit, jay. The idea that academics somehow comes first in all of this is laughable.
