  • Ignoring other posters

If you wish to ignore a poster you have two main options (other than the time honored tradition of pretending they don't exist via exertion of willpower and discipline).
    1. Use the board's built in ignore functionality. To enable the board's built in ignore functionality go to the following page:

User CP -> Edit Ignore List

The board's ignore functionality is what I would describe as limited ignore. Posts by the ignored poster are not displayed but the software does reveal to you that an ignored poster has posted and you can manually override the ignore on a post by post basis. Additionally, if another poster quotes the ignored poster then you will see the post in the quoted text.

    2. If you desire complete ignore functionality (my understanding is this is like the cougarboard ignore functionality) then I suggest you download and install a plugin for Firefox called FFVB:

      The FFVB addon page.

This plugin comes very close to a giving you complete ignore functionality. If you add someone to your ignore list, you will not see the posts and if another poster quotes the ignored poster the quoted text is removed. Actually, the entire text box is removed so there is no trace at all of the ignored posters activity (except indirectly through what the unignored poster actually writes in their response). There is also no manual override on a post by post basis either . To see any posts by the ignored poster you need to remove the poster from your ignore list. There are only small observable traces of the poster in things like the "last poster in a thread display."

The addon adds a new sub-menu when you right click on your mouse in Firefox. All the functionality of the addon is available in the right click sub-menu. It also adds a toolbar at the bottom of the webpage but this can be turned off in the options menu of the addon sub-menu.

    Note
Do not respond to this thread telling me you are going to ignore a specific poster. I will delete any posts of that nature.

If you have technical or functionality questions about FFVB Firefox addon I would be glad to try to answer them the best I can.

Will you create a Hall of Shame like CB so we know who the most ignored poster is?

Just an update on FFVB. It now has some new features in the latest version that people might find useful besides complete ignore. One useful feature is selective ignoring of avatars. This can be useful for certain environments and allows you to avoid turning of avatars completely in those environments. It also now allows selective ignoring of signatures but this seems less useful.

I have found this feature very helpful on the Ute board. For me, the way it works is I get a bellyful of a particular guy, ignore him, then a few weeks later, un-ignore him. I highly recommend this approach!

Dumb question: I have a Mac at home that I have not yet fully mastered. (I've used a PC for many years.) The Mac uses Firefox. How does one right-click using a Mac mouse?

I believe you use the apple (or option key, can't remember, don't have a mac) key while you click.

I am a Mac, and I just click the right button on my PC mouse.

The newer Macs (or at least some of them) have the option to enable a right click on your mouse.

                      It's called a boycott.

BY the way, look hard at this picture. I think you'll notice that there is more than black and white present:

I can't use Firefox on my work-issued laptop, so the FFvB option is not available. Is there anything that works with Internet Explorer?

Apparently there must be since it would appear that only Google Chrome users like myself don't have you on ignore.
