    Same question for Clarence Thomas.

Yes in both cases. Racial profiling?

Thomas' nomination isn't a good example for comparison as Thurgood Marshall had already broken that glass ceiling.

My belief is that Sotomayor was nominated because she is a far left-winger. Obama will try to tilt the balance of power to that side before he leaves the White House.

IMO her ethnicity was icing on the cake.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

In that case, she was a threefer? Left wing AND hispanic AND female?

Sure it is. Marshall and Thomas are on opposite ends of the political spectrum.

Everything I have heard about Sotomayor is that she is actually pretty moderate. I'll admit I am not a close watcher of the Supreme Court. Has she shown something in the last few months to indicate that she is less moderate than thought?

It certainly didn't hurt her chances, agreed. But I do believe that Obama looked more at her politics than her race. As long as they think like he does, he doesn't care what color they are.

That's a good point. If we look at politics, rather than ethnicity, you are correct. I was just answering according to exie's question.

I haven't followed it much either. I was talking about her politics at the time of her nomination.

To a lesser extent than Sandra Day O'Conner's gender played into her nomination.
