I am not a superstar with working on my car. But I am curious to those that have tried--I am looking to get a car security system and power locks on my car. I can get for around $500 from a couple of local shops.

I was given a link by cougartown over on CB to commando systems where I can purchase an alarm system kit as well as a power lock kit for a total of around $200. How difficult, if you have done it, is it to install all of this in my car? Could I do this in a weekend? Thoughts on any other system to look at?

Whatever you do...make sure you get remote starting capabilities.

Living in Utah it is freezing in the winter. When you get out of the car at night, make sure the defrosters are set to kill. Get up in the morning and 10 minutes before you leave, remotely start the car. No one can steal the thing because if you get in and hit the break it kills the engine.

I have that here in Cali. In the summer it gets 110-115. Inside the care can be anywhere from 140-150. 10 minutes before we leave I start the truck remotely. Turned the AC to stun before we got out in the morning...truck is nice and comfy when we leave for home.

I spent 550 for mine and that included install. I did already have power locks though.

Anyway, power door locks can be a PITA to install. The alarm as well depending on what kind of system you have. I had a Viper alarm system on my 1990 Nissan Stanza XE. Later disabled because the horn wouldn't stop. And then later I hooked it up to a push button that I put on my dash because I thought it was cool.

Good luck. I'd never buy a car without power door locks with the intention of installing them myself later.
