I get an enormous sense of self-satisfaction when I manage to repair a broken appliance in my home. Our dryer was making ungodly noises and I thought maybe the belt was worn out. I found a nice site called www.applianceaid.com that told me everything I needed to know about taking the thing apart (we inherited the dryer but not a manual.) Once I had the drum out and could see that the belt was fine, I found that the two rollers were sitting at weird angles and there were big piles of metal shavings on the floor below them. The axles of both had been completely worn away.
It's a Whirlpool, so I called Lowe's and they connected me to their parts warehouse who got the new rollers out to me in a couple days. The whole thing turned out to be only about a $20 fix and my wife was extremely grateful. I could make a Solon-inspired "worshiping in the fertility groves" reference here, but I'm way too classy.
Anyway, that Appliance Aid link was great and has resources for all major-brand appliances.
