but I feel bad for Chambers.

Yes, he knew what he was getting into with the Honor Code and everything, but the first chance he has to party and blow off steam as a college student, and he could theoretically be suspended from school?

I'm not interested in Utah sports radio so I'm out of the loop on the details and who actually participated, but I'd conjecture one doesn't drink beer at BYU unless he wants to be suspended.

Why are you assuming this is first chance to party?? I'm sure this was just the first time he got caught.

He should leave before they get a chance to ruin his life.

I'm assuming that he's been with the football team, on their schedule and structure, since he stepped on campus in late July.

I feel bad me as a fan if Chambers gets suspended. We don't even know at this point if he had a drink, right? If he didn't drink, I don't understand what all the fuss is about.

FWIW, I highly doubt this was his first party.

I bet he had cookies and watched "Cars" at the party, too. And the boys and girls sat on opposite sides of the room.

I know a lot of the fundamentalists and Cougarboard Uberdork types will disagree with me on this,,,but it comes back to just how stupid the Honor Code itself is.

So some kids had some beers.

                  Big freakin' whoop.

I have no illusions that plenty of these guys do whatever they want. A few examples, I have inside knowledge (not a pun) that Brett Engeman was pumping a few chicks. I saw Jonathan Pittman knocking down some drinks at a club in Park City. One of the football players I knew who was a pretty straight-laced guy essentially inferred that a group of players that were buddies which included Owen Pochman pretty much did whatever with the ladies. This guy said after hearing about Pochman dating the Playboy model "it's fine by me if the guy wants his dick to fall off."

At that time, there were guys that pretty much held to the honor code (the group that included Doman, Halliday and I believe Denney), then there were the guys who didn't (Owen Pochman and his crowd).
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

He had some beers with recruits. He's a moron.

I wonder if football recruiting needs the HC, as ironic as it may sound.

If you strip away the religious pretense from BYU football, the only real selling point to LDS recruits is simply a larger dating pool from which to find an LDS wife. Other than that, there are no football-related reasons to choose BYU over a number of other schools.

If you keep the HC/religion as an integral part of the team and recruiting, it appeals to the more conservative/traditional LDS recruits and their families and offers BYU a selling point that no other school really has.

In other words, while the HC may be driving away lots of blue chippers, it is also the very lifeblood that keeps the team afloat. It allows the coach to bloat the roster with LDS kids that may otherwise choose to go elsewhere. Including Utah.
