I'm operating under the following assumptions:
1. Bronco is smart.
2. Bronco wants to have a starter named by the end of spring ball.
3. I have absolutely zero inside information and only know what I know from the media reports.
Nelson has had plenty of practice reps to give Bronco a good idea of what he can do. By emphatically stating that Nelson is NOT the starter going into the spring, Bronco is basically saying Nelson is not going to be the guy. When Max Hall transferred, there were very strong indications during the John Beck era that Hall was going to be the next guy. Not so with Nelson. To quote a sage ... speaks volumes.
Lark just got off a mission in late December. It's almost impossible to look like a starting QB so soon after returning from a mission. I think he could win the job in the fall if it's too close to call coming out of the spring, but I don't see him winning the job outright during the spring.
Munns may be really good, but he doesn't get off his mission for a few months. I don't think he has any chance of starting in 2010.
That leaves us with Heaps. I don't like starting freshmen at any position, let alone QB, but we're in a new era of QB training. Heaps has as much training at QB, both privately and within an advanced passing system at his high school, as a lot of guys who are starters in college. With no entrenched starter ahead of him and a stud RB lined up behind him, he is probably going to the starter in 2010. I think he'll even be the starter coming out of the spring.
