  • I hate John Mayer

I thought Sheryl Crow's version of Sweet Child O Mine would go down as the worst cover of all time, but now I'm not so sure...

Now I may be biased because I despise John Mayer and his annoyingly breathy voice, but this really sucked. He takes an American classic and turns it into a generic John Mayer love ballad.

Ok, actually, Sheryl Crow's cover is still the worst.

    What about this gem?

(don't tell anyone, but I actually think it's kind of cool)
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

John Mayer is a damn good guitarist and he's a pretty good songwriter. I don't care for his voice. And though I recognize his talents I am not a fan. I usually have to endure his music though as Gidget is a fan and there is usually one of his CDs in our disc changer.

John Mayer is a really funny guy and a great song writer. I've gotten used to his voice and really like it now. His chord progressions are consistently awesome, and his guitar playing continues to improve. He's getting very close to being as good as SRV and clapton. I've never really liked Free Falling, but his take on it is damn good. Then again, I really like mellow stuff. Mayer's blues stuff kicks ass, and his occasional jazz stuff is incredible.

Gasph, cough, weeze..... Surely you can't be serious.

Did you know that SRV used to tour with Clapton with Clapton as the headliner? Supposedly, Clapton frequently would comment that it should have been the other way around. He thought SRV was far more talented than he was.

My wife's a guitarist and a huge fan of Mayer (and SRV and Clapton...) and she agrees with this. She's not a pop music fan at all. She read a story about him several years ago that talked about how the guy has basically played the guitar every waking hour of his life (literally 12+ hours a day)--totally obsessed. At this point, he was still doing pop stuff, so I was surprised to hear it.

EDIT: It being Sunday and all, I'm going to tie in a frequent question I've had...what would the world be like if everyone were Mormon? IMO, one of the requirements of genius is an unhealthy obsession. If everyone led balanced lives where they were attentive husbands/wives and parents, valiant home teachers, and magnifiers of their church callings, how many Einsteins would there be?

You should really check out Mayer's blues stuff. I think you'd be surprised. He's done shows with BB King and Clapton and holds his own. Clapton hasn't ever been an outstanding soloist, so it's not like he's the paragon of guitar skill, but Mayer is right up there with him at this point. SRV was definitely better than Clapton. Clapton isn't called "slow hand" for nothing.

              Here's Mayer doing slow blues:

So at first I wasn't a John Mayer fan. His first two CD's came and went and I knew he was talented but I was more impressed by his guitar skills then anything else. With my musical back ground you could say I was quite the music snob, and John Mayer has been the first to say he has a hard time thinking of himself as a great vocalist. Cuz he's not. But he can hear music that other people just don't hear, and even when he can't reach those notes with his voice, it only makes his attempts even more blues and more raw - which is something I can appreciate from any musical prodigy, which I think he is. I don't appreciate a lot of his most popular singles, but I love his songwriting and it was the first time I heard this song on the John Mayer Trio TRY! album that I really said "Wow" and started listening to his stuff a lot more. This isn't a live video but it is a live performance and I have been ion love with this song for a good while now.

I will admit that I haven't listened to much of Mayer's stuff.

Isn't this the same guy that does those cheesy "Your body is a wonderland" and "Daughters" songs?

Yea he's had some very chick-baity songs, but he started out playing blues and has used his ability write pop songs to bring the blues to whole new generation. Blues musicians don't make money these days, so the path he took is about as perfect as one could ever hope for. These days even his pop albums are pretty bluesy. Check out Gravity for a very popular song that's also very blue. I love the songwriting and lyrics too.

Also, check out his Hendrix covers. Wind Cries Mary and Bold as Love are amazing, especially without a band.

Yes. But watch some footage of him at the Crossroads Blues Festival. Dude is legit and a near carbon copy of SRV both in playing style and vocal delivery. Hopefully his career develops more in that direction and away from some of the crap he's previously done.

I think about this question all the time. Aren't we fortunate as a society that there are people with ridiculously single-minded obsessions that end up making discoveries and artistic creations that we all benefit from?

You just don't want to be one of those people because they are generally unhappy and completely screw up all of their relationships due to the lack of balance in their lives.
