If Majerus wanted to come back...

If it was the Majerus after the '98-'99 season, then speaking for myself, I say nope."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

No. I think Majerus burned down the bridge, the house and just about everything else by the time his stay had ended at Utah.Originally posted by scottie View Postwould Ute fans take him?
I am very thankful for Majerus and the respect he brought to the program. I still think Utah can capture that again...but I also think that Ute fans didn't realize how good they had it with Majerus and how difficult it is to sustain a top flight program for such a long period of time. As good as Gonzaga has been, it still hasn't accomplished what Utah did during the 90s.

Would you take the post-Andre Miller Majerus? The one who decided that he was bigger than the game itself?Originally posted by mpfunk View PostAbsolutely without question or hesitation I would take Majerus back at Utah.
Majerus' downfall at Utah was because he had impressed himself so much by taking a group of kids that weren't recruited by anyone and made them into a helluva team. Rather than continue to build on what he had already done, he decided to scrap everything and do it again."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

Boylen is doing fine. Last year he proved he can run a strong, disciplined program, and he's been recruiting better than we've seen at Utah since the '90's. I counsel patience with Boylen as I did with Whit early last year. Ute fans disappointing in their impatience. I'll go further. Ute fans are ingrates and ignoramuses. The worst fans I"ve ever seen. There are some that have been carping at Whit even as he has gone 18-1. If I were Whit I'd get the hell out of dodge, away from these impossible fans, and athletic director with an inflated opinion of himself, after this year. I'd go to a more sophisticated fan base and program.
I bet I have defended Majerus more than anyone. But he's 60 years old and his sun has set. It's a shame Christ Hill stabbed him in the back. Hill, by the way, was murmering about Whit 19 games ago. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Absolutely, I would take that Majerus. That one was still better than anything we have had since and would like be better than anyone we could get.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostWould you take the post-Andre Miller Majerus? The one who decided that he was bigger than the game itself?

You probably hated Majerus when he was there. I don't recall you sticking up for him. Just like you hate 11-0 Whit. It's sad you'll never enjoy any Ute success.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostAbsolutely, I would take that Majerus. I think Whittingham has turned it around but most of my criticism came after the UNLV debacle, and he deserved criticism. Something clicked and he became a better coach and turned things around.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostYou probably hated Majerus when he was there. I don't recall you sticking up for him. I always supported Majerus, but I will admit when he left I thought we could do better. I was dead wrong. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

Great coaches are born, not made. But they need time to succeed. My theory about coaches is you give them enough time, don't micromanage or live or die by each succeeding game, and then quickly get rid of them if they cause you to give up on them. Basketball coaches need a 3-5 years before serious evaluation, football 5-7 years. As long as Boylen keeps recruiting as he has my mind is wide open. Shouldn't it be clear to you how devastated Giacoletti left the program? On top of that a couple of good players quit last year.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI think Whittingham has turned it around but most of my criticism came after the UNLV debacle, and he deserved criticism. You should learn from your past mistakes. It's what makes humans different.

My concern is that they gave up 80 points to a division 2 school. Majerus had the Utes playing defense and rebounding from day one.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostGreat coaches are born, not made. But they need time to succeed. I remain astonished how many Ute fans have yet to repent of their desire to kill the golden goose. Being competitive at a MWC school with no built in recruiting base (BYU) is not only not a give, it is hard. I hope Boylen can rebuild some semblance of a program but we may never see another top 5 seed again.

Majerus is a great fit for the university of utah. For whatever reason he's gone, and I miss him. My favorite Coach Majerus quote was on the old channel 7 (kued) coach's show with Bill Marcroft. Jimmy Soto was the player guest, and Majerus was talking about how Jimmy's mom made Majerus some Mexican food. Marjerus made a comment about how you can tell good Mexican food by how big of a hole he blows in the toilet afterwards. He was crude, but philosophical.
A seeming walking contradiction.
My dad worked with a girl that was dating a Ute player in the early 1990's. I don't remember which one. My dad had a heart attack and Majerus heard about it from this girl, and Majerus got a card for my dad and had all the players sign it. He was always kind hearted and funny.
I miss Majerus.
For me, Boylen has five years to build the program to respect and start winning conference championships. I believe he can do it.
