  • If BYU had veto power over Utah

Two assumptions: First, all the speculation about Utah's imminent invitation to the PAC-12 is correct and second if BYU had the power to veto Utah's leaving to any conference without the Y (Wilford made sure the language was hidden in the state constitution...who knew?).

As a BYU fan would you vote to keep Utah from joining the Pac-10 without BYU?

Yes, keep them in the MWC. This would be the ulitimate rivarly move to punk them.

No, good riddance, let them go.

I voted to make Utah stay but not because I want to see Utah screwed over. I believe if the MWC doesn't lose anyone it is a BCS conference within the next couple of years anyway. I think that is better for both BYU and Utah then Utah leaving. Now, if the MWC will get a BCS automatic bid, I change my vote and let Utah go.

I vote to keep them, because I want to be in a strong conference, and Utah helps. So, if we could replace them with someone more strong, I'd be fine with that, as long as we keep the rivalry alive. But there's no chance of that happening.

I voted to keep them, because I don't want to have suicidal thoughts if the Utes leave and we get stuck. I'm very weak.

I vote to do whatever causes the most angst to the Ute fanbase.

ps is this veto a serious option? I had read something about this alleged veto power elsewhere. I didn't think it was legit. If it truly is legit, it may be an example of the kind of red-taped intrusion the P10 was hoping to avoid in the first place.

Both Holmoe and Chris Hill have said that the 2 programs are tied together, and one doesn't go anywhere without the other.

But I doubt there is an official veto power, or any way to enforce that understanding.

Utah's our most direct, major competitor. You'd be a stupid businessman if you had veto power over Utah joining a BCS conference without us and allowed it to happen.

It would be nice for BYU and Utah to both be top 10 programs in BB and FB, but the reality of this world is that it's a world of scarcity. There is only so much TV revenue and fan support in this market. BYU and Utah both compete for it. They compete for the same recruits a lot of the time. Utah going to a BCS conference while BYU stayed in the MWC would not be a death blow to BYU, but it would have the potential to be a very crippling blow.

Also this notion that Utah and BYU have a pact to not join a conference without the other and not act alone is a joke. These relationships only work as long as they're serving both parties. Either institution would stab the other in the back if they had the chance to better themselves.

Both chris Hill and Tom Holmoe have publicly made comments about the two teams being a package deal.

Imagine (which I can't) if the PAC-10 extended an invite to Utah but not BYU, and Chris Hill announced publicly that unless BYU were included, the Utes would decline. Max Hall would have no choice but to go to Hill, helmet in hand and, retracting every mean thing he ever said about Utah, beg Hill for forgiveness. "Mein bruder, mein bruder!!", Dr. Hill would exclaim as the two embraced, as would Morgan Scalley and Lenny Gomes, and legions of former enemy combatants on Utefans and Cougarboard. The rancor and acidity of the rivalry would cease, testimonies would be borne, tears would be shed. I can't wait.

Yeah, it's almost as if he doesn't do that, Max Hall will be vindicated.
                    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Imagine the reaction should the PAC-10 invite the U to join and the U accept the offer, if Dr. Hill announces that BYU is being dropped from the schedule in all sports, stating "It does us no good to play BYU."

Well, given the Utes' record against BYU the past few years, who could argue with that? But MBN is right, here's the Utes' chance to prove Max wrong. I fear that, as in so many things concerning BYU of late, they are not up to the task.

The BYU/Utah package deal alliance means about as much as the Michael Corleone/Hyman Roth alliance or the DeNiro/Pesci character's alliance in Casino.

The alliance works exactly as long as both parties are perfectly satisfied and benefiting equally.

I am imagining Utah leaving, TCU leaving, and BYU getting an auto-bid most seasons as it runs unopposed through its conference schedule.

I didn't vote, in a DDD like objection to the wording of the options. I don't want to punk them, and I don't want to say "Good riddance". I would like to see BYU and Utah stay in the same conference, but I will not hold it against Utah if they search for greener pastures.
