  • I never promised you an herb garden....

I am getting sick of paying 3-4 bucks for a small bunch of my favorite herbs and want to start an herb garden. What do you guys do? Part of your regular garden? In pots? Indoors?

I need some tips, as I love me some herbs (rosemary, basil, cilantro, tarragon....)

I haven't transitioned to the indoor garden yet, but I grow everything in pots on the patio so I don't have to worry so much about bugs. The biggest thing for me has been to plant something that grows quickly and taller than everything else to shade the more delicate herbs. Nasturtium works okay depending on the height of the plants around it.

Mint's about the easiest thing you can grow, but it definitely needs to be in a pot so it doesn't spread. I grow chocolate mint, spearmint, & peppermint. Some of my other favorites that grow pretty well are dill, parsley (which actually grows pretty well with the other vegetables as well--I think I read that the smell repels some of the more problematic bugs), basil, and chives. I really like the nasturtium flowers with summer salads so I always grow those as well.

I live in Salt Lake and have created a small area with southern exposure/near full sun for an herb garden. Oregano, sage, thyme, parsley and mint have all done well for us as perennials. We plant basil every year and put rosemary in a pot so as to be able to bring it indoors in the winter.

Where are you getting your favorite herb for three to four bucks?

I think I might box off an area on the south side of our house for an herb garden. Can't wait.

I was thinking about using a strawberry planter such as this to plant an herb garden.
