  • 1994 Buick Century

So, I bought a 1994 Buick Century from my next-door neighbor for $1. It runs, but it's leaking fuel from several gaskets. My retired neighbor, a really great guy who is always asking if he can do anything for everyone, offered to teach me how to fix the car.

I'll try and post photos and updates as the work progresses. For now, it's too damned cold and rainy to do anything since we don't have a garage.

That's cool. I am clueless beyond simple, basic maintenance when it comes to cars. I can change the oil, and filter, change spark plugs and wires, etc., remove and replace tires. Beyond that, I don't know anything about repairing cars. I wish I did. I have a friend who does everything for his cars and he saves a lot of money on repairs. It also makes it easier to buy cars.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Sounds like it could be a great project/experience, wuap. Please keep us updated and take a pic of the beast.

I would love to be in that situation. My car knowledge is even thinner than Pellegrino's. I can't even change my own oil!

This dude is basically selling you car repair instruction and course materials for $1. What a steal. Perhaps this guy is just lonely and wants a reason to spend some time with someone. You mentioned that he is always offering to help people.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

That is pretty neat. The only thing I know how to do is change my own oil.

I actually bought the car from a different neighbor. This guy is in his late 60s and already has his yard where he wants it, and he likes to work. I think he's just a decent guy who likes to teach people how to do stuff he's good at. He drove semis for a living.

Maybe he wants you to have respect on how he handles his rig

To give closure to this thread, even though I might be breaking a commandment by mentioning this, I sold the car for the same $1 I paid for it (+$15 to pay me for the registration) to a couple in our ward who are both laid off and trying to sell their expensive-monthly-payment truck for something they can afford until they find work again.

I sort of felt like it wasn't going to be mine long. My neighbor who was going to help me fix it just had open hernia surgery, so it would've sat in the driveway for another 2 months. This way it gets fixed and used by someone who needs it vs somebody who would've liked to have had a second car.

Ugh. So, the guy told the wife that he wasn't going to work ever again, that he was going to just try and mooch off the government. So, she's divorcing him. They had a yard sale this weekend, and have moved out of the house. The car is in his name, and he's keeping it. I know I can't ask him for it back, but part of me wishes that I had never helped them.

That's the part I try not to listen to.
