"Ceremony" - Joy Division/New Order (both released before '82)

I posted the RH cover, because it's so great.

"I'll break them down, no mercy shown,
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time..."

As a teen, I thought those lines were all-timers.

This is from '77, but still fits in here:

The last one is called Rudi, A Message to you by The Specials. Two Tone is the name of the label.

I can play that intro on harmonica.

Two tone was the movement/genre (it later became a label - 2 Tone)...

Edit: I was wrong. It looks like the label came at the same time...

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2_Tone

I've always referred to the genre (UK ska bands like The Specials, Selecter, Madness, etc.) as two tone. I thought the label would have come later.

two tone was the movement genre? dont you mean ska and oi?

madness and the specials existed before they signed with 2 Tone.

proceed with caution on this one. but I am listening.

Ska existed before the late 70s in the UK, of course. As you know, Ska is a type of music. I see Two Tone as a distinct movment of Ska. In fact, I believe most UK music publications at the time referred to the genre by the name Two Tone – and refered to it as Ska inspired.

could be. as far back as I can remember, it was referred to as ska, meaning if someone asked me what kind of music I liked, I would have never said, "I like 2 Tone." I like ska, or I like reggae, but I have never heard anyone refer to it as "2 Tone" unless they were specifying the label. The "2 tone" phrase was something that came about after The Specials and Madness were already in existence, meaning that ska was actually the original genre. Whether they categorized themselves afterwards as 2 Tone bands....that sounds reasonable. The Selecter, Rhoda Dakar, Bad Manners, The Beat, etc. All those bands toured together and performed on the same bills frequently.

Iirc, 2 Tone itself was simply a reference to the black and white checkered logo that The Specials originally used, later adopted by the label (the logo itself was also a subtle reference to the black and white composition within the band, something that was unique to ska, as opposed to its reggae island roots, which remained almost exclusively black). When the Specials came to LA and played at The Whiskey, the entire facade was decked out in the 2-tone checkers.

on a related note, a great 2 Tone sampler is a disc called "This Are 2 Tone." Check it out, rude boy!
