I had to stop after the first 10 comments for fear my eyes would roll right out of my head. Sure I think Bronco is the bee's knees but some of those people are deifying him.

I'd rather invest my money with a Nigerian than read the comments in the SL Trib or DesNews.

Given his approach, why would any kid who is able to think for himself verbally commit to play for Mendenhall?

I would advise to any kid that is offered a scholarship to play at BYU to tell Mendenhall "Thanks for the offer. I'll get back to you."

There's nothing wrong really with Mendenhall being that way, as it seems he's being consistent and if kids want to play for him, that's cool too. But if a kid wants to weigh his options, he shouldn't play Mendenhall's game.

You are right if you want to weigh your options you probably should not commit to a school. If you are done weighing your options and you are ready to choose a school then I would commit. Not commit yet keep looking.

The deification is what gets to me. Look, as a football coach the guy has done wonders. Maybe his hard attitude is what has helped him to do wonders. However, to then have fans indicate what this all means is to the young men of America, especially LDS, Bronco is here to find out "who is on the Lord's side who" gives me a puking feeling.

I honestly feel really bad about cancelling my TBS subscription today. I sit quietly in High Priest Group meeting and let some of them go off on other people ouside the Quorum or Quorum member who aren't there. Really, who is going to start a fight in HP meeting, not me. To me that is what posting at TBS has become. I don't like what I have heard about how Kona handled things, but some of them over there have made this Bronco vs Kona thing as big as the war in heaven. Good son Bronco, bad son Kona.

Since that place has become more and more like HP meeting, I have decided to not attend rather than be confrontational, just like what I decided as far as HP meetings go.

And yet only 3 have decommitted even after that speech. Furthermore the quality and class of athlete taking the field continues to climb inspite of this approach. The only conclusion that I can make from this is that A) Bronco is a great motivator and/or B) BYU has appeal to more people than fans of other MWC teams want to believe.

Yes, but we all know that a verbal commit isn't binding in college sports. Mendenhall personally believes it is, which is fine. But the problem seems to be that Mendenhall thinks it's a character issue if a kids verbally commits to BYU then decides to look at other offers.

It isn't. It's called life. People change their minds all the time and rightfully so because it's their prerogative to do so. Mendenhall needs to accept that.

Let's be honest, BYU and Bronco I am sure would dispute this, but kids who are less independent are more likely to succeed at BYU.

One other thing I have asked many times and no one has answered.

Bronco gave the ultimatum to Kona. Why didn't he give the same one to Philips. I read the story, Philips said Bronco told him he shouldn't go, but no ultimatum. Philips didn't even know about Kona.

As a parent, my kid would understand such a commitment and know that if he commits, it's over..

In this case it sounds like the parents got overly excited about the lure of the recruiting process. That is sad..

Bronco is doing it right, and truthfully I don't think he needs to explain anything...

PS: Thanks for the warning. I closed it without reading the comments which I know would piss me off...

Bronco isn't making them decide then and there if they will take a one time only offer from BYU. Undecided recruits in the past have reported that Bronco encouraged them to look elsewhere before committing.

So this "think for himself" comment is a bunch of nonsense.

I have no problem admitting that BYU is appealing to many athletes or that quality athletes are signing to play there.

I'm just saying that Mendenhall needs to accept that a verbal commit is not binding.
