Perhaps someone can explain this to me. Not so much on this board, but on other boards with Cougar fans on them, Tevo is oft times mocked and criticized. Not for his football talents, but for him as a person. Taunts such as "he should serve a real mission" are lame at best.

He seems to represent most everything a BYU fan would support. I can see some Utes hating him for the same reason they hate Collie, but why any BYU fan would dislike the guy on a personal basis is beyond me. Has he like Huckleberry, publicly degraded mormons.

Agreed. I'm biased, seeing as her political position at least seems to be in step with mine, but that sort of thinking helps to tone down some of the ridiculous political rancor.

I think it's in part because he's associated with Florida and everybody resents the team at the top.

But it's also deeper than that. I think that a lot of us, whether fair or not, feel that altruism or righteousness that is recognized and celebrated is somehow less altruistic and less righteous than that which goes unnoticed. Truly righteous living is I guess supposed to be entirely unpleasant and unacknowledged. I've seen even Mother Teresa's work discredited on account of the celebrity it eventually afforded her.

I understand why most people don't like religion thrown in their face, especially when they are there for a sporting event not a sermon. However, that group of people wouldn't include BYU fans.

Well, sort of...but moreover she, as an apparently pro-choice demi-feminist, was not afraid to speak out against the absurdity and even potential dangers of the increasingly extreme feminist movement, and to address the logical flaws in NOW's approach. That's a big deal. One of the unfortunate code of ethics of feminism is that you never ever critique the movement or question your fellow comrades. Her attempt at honest and unbiased analysis is refreshing.

Agreed. NOW's brand of feminism is offensive to many women (my wife, a demi-feminist herself, included) because it it exactly what she said it is: the National Organization of You Must Think Like Us If You Have a Vagina.

I think MOST people are mocking the media's strange, obsessive man crush on Tebow and not Tebow himself.

NONONO. All the moreso BYU fans. Mormons give a considerable portion of their income away; they spend two years away from their families on largely unappreciated efforts; they donate their time and efforts in order to remain in good standing with their church. Yet all these go largely unnoticed. Tebow's lifestyle is similar in nature, but lesser in degree; yet his choices are heralded as if they're somehow unprecedented. I honestly think that people feel like if his righteousness were genuine, that he would somehow keep it out of the headlines.

Well then I guess it is good we aren't as visible as Florida. If we were, people might be bugged and think our righteousness was ungenuine. I like it now. Fans in the league think BYU righteousness is genuine.

The difference between BYU and Tebow is that Tebow went on a mission to serve others. BYU sends their kids away to train for football, especially linemen.

A well written article with sound conclusions. I agree with her.

I think this is part of it - and I don't think it is necessarily Tebow's fault. I think he's generally a good kid who believes in something and stands up for it.

I think many BYU fans react to the way the media seems to fawn over Tebow's "goodness". Of course, the fans that do react are like the obedient son in the parable of the prodigal son.

I'm not saying Tebow is prodigal by any means. Just that BYU fans feel like "He went on a mission for 2 weeks, I went for 2 years. He volunteered at a soup kitchen, I worked 3 different days stuffing hygiene kits, he told everyone to donate to a cause, I donate Fast Offerings that help the poor every month. He is held up and deified, and I'm told I'm not Christian."

Again - nothing wrong with Tebow or the stuff he's done. Just that I think some crack on him for how the press holds him up of an example of self-sacrifice and all that is good in the world.
