  • Question on soccer (running)...

Question for those who run or are in game shape:

I few friends talked me into playing in an organized soccer league this year (I played way, way back in HS).

Our first game was on Friday night – under the lights. I walked off the field in the second half and threw up. I'm not accustomed to that much running; it's not the same as basketball.

What can I do between now and next Friday to help? Run every day? Run every other day, with leg work outs or other cardio in between?

Long term suggestions are great, but I need help (crash course) before next Friday at 8:00 PM.

I ran today and feel ok, but I'm not sure if I should be running laps, stairs or what.

My advice: make sure whatever you eat for lunch on Friday will come back up easily.

I run 40-45 miles a week. Last summer I got talked into playing in a rec soccer league, and I had to sub out at least every 10 minutes, I couldn't hang. As the season went on, it got a little better, but not much. Constant all out sprinting.

I have a whole new respect for people who play soccer well, but I still think it's dumber than hell.

I help coach a club team here in Az. We have the kids run around the track the 1st few weeks to get in soccer shape. Sprint the straightways and jog the curves. Start with the jog then sprint 100%. Don't stop and catch your breath or walk. Do it for a mile (4 laps) walk a lap and do it again. It will help the weekend warrior in you keep your lunch down.

Our football team did the same drill but with cones marking out a much shorter oval instead of the 1/4 mile track. Called it UCLA Drill.

          Surfah mentioned UCLA.
