  • Derek Poundstone

Naturally one of the best names ever for a strongman but the following clip is just unreal. He switches fron an alternate to overhand grip while resting the axle (loaded with 400 pounds) on his upper abs. Freaky

Dick Pound is a pretty good name too (not for strongman, just in general):

Derek Poundstone should have his gym membership revoked. you aren't supposed to throw your weights down like that.

They're rubberized on the outside ... that's what he is using and that's why the weight kind of bounce when he drops it. Back when I went to BYU, all the weights in the Smith Fieldhouse weightroom were bumber plates so you've probably used bumber plates before.

With all respect, I think the plates bounce because they weigh a boatload and the floor is somewhat resilient (and the bar has some flex, too). If those were metal plates they would still bounce on that floor, wouldn't they?

Your're right you'd get a bounce either way (although the weight does seem to hit the deadlifting platform on the way down and normal plates probably would have damaged the platform)... I take back what I said other than he is using bumper plates and bumper plates are usually used in olympic lifts where people often drop the weight at the end of the lift.

Still I think it would have been a bit different ... at the very least louder and not as high.
