I venture to say that this is a result of the poor recruiting at DT for a few years. I think the coaches got nervous and gave out scholarships to the kids they knew they could nab in summer. Throw in the gamble on the Cottonwood kid and they are stuck. If BYU had landed some decent DTs each of the past two years I doubt they overreact and committ themselves to the hilt that early knowing Heimuli is still out there.

Of course, the assumption that some people are making here is that BYU would have really been in the running for Hemuli even if they had a spot open. I think this story is a giant red herring.

The "go on a mission first" thing is BYU's way of oversigning above the 25 recruit limit; it's not some evangelical effort.
