  • Sex on Fire- Kings of Leon

If you're expecting some deep interpretation into the lyrics of this song, well, prepare to be disappointed. No, this song was one of four that 98.7 in Southern California insists on playing at least once an hour. The other three are "Love Hurts" by Incubus, "All My Life" by Foo Fighters (admit it, you're a smidge disappointed I didn't say "All My Life by KC and Jojo" aren't you?) and "Love Me Dead" by Ludo. Also, either "Caress Me Down" or "What I Got" by Sublime were played at least once every couple hours. (The first three were constants, and the Sublime songs alternated, but it was always those two songs).

I stumbled onto the station while scanning for a non-ranchero, non-hip hop station and heard Love Me Dead. I like the song, so I stuck around. I hadn't heard the Incubus song before, and truthfully the band has never elicited much more than a "meh" from me, but this song was actually quite listenable. Kings of Leon are a solid group, and I was pleased with this single from their newest album. Foo Fighters are ok in small doses, and
Sublime is always good. There was also some Death Cab and Keane mixed in, which was making for a decent mix of past classics and new hits.

A couple days into our stay, it became clear how frequently these songs were being played, and I was tempted to change the station. However, I was somewhat intrigued as to why the Foo Fighters song was being mixed in with all these "new hits," and I decided to stick with the station for our entire 6-day stay in Laguna. All told, I think I heard the first 4 songs at least a dozen times (and considering how little we were in the car, that number is nothing short of amazing).

This concludes my random 98.7 rant.

Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Kings of Leon are more than solid, they are awesome. Or, at least they were awesome until their latest album. I did think Sex On Fire was a great single though.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I definitely could have used the Indie 103.1 tip last week.

Ludo, Kings of Leon and Incubus. Where's the Foo, though?

K-Ci and Jojo are an abomination. I remember the days when R&B was split among 2 dueling factions. On one side you had the bad boys in Jodeci on the other side you had side you had the nice guys, Boyz II Men. Neither were any good but at least you had some sort of battle going on. As long as the battle existed, there was some room for innovation and something other than the Boyz II Men, gospel singing over hip-hop beats. For some reason Ki-Ci and Jo-Jo abandoned the battle and became Boyz II Men. R&B was forever dead as it all became Boyz II Men. It was a sad day.

Sure you still get the occasional D'Angelo or Maxwell to remind you that R&B was once good, but for the most part it is dead. I blame K-Ci and Jo-Jo more than Boyz II Men for his murder, and specifically that damn song All My Life.
