  • Martial arts for kids

Have any of you put your kids in karate, aikido or judo classes? If you have, what did you think of those classes? There is a real good aikido class for kids in our neighborhood that I am going to put my kid in but I wanted to know if any of you have had any experience with something like this.

My parents had us in Aikido at a very early age, it was fun and I learned a lot. I also took Tae Kwon Do for a few years. My freshman year of highschool I fought a kid that was a 2nd degree Tae Kwon Do black belt and kicked his ass. So if you want your kids to be tough, I would probably go with Jiu Jiutsu or Wrestling.

I know nothing about the differences in martial arts...is Aikido a good one to do? He is 6 years old. He is already a pretty tough kid but I want him to be confident and be able to protect himself and if needed, win a fight.

My oldest too a sort of mixed arts approach class starting when he was about 7. It was a great experience. It taught him discipline and improved his balance and coordination considerably. He quit when he was about 11 or 12 and now, at the age of 20, he probably couldn't do any of the moves if he was attacked, but at the time it was very useful to him. My youngest, who just turned 11, also took it in the same age range., it was not as useful to him, but still wortht he time, IMO.
        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

I would second junkie's recommendation on Jiu Jitsu or wrestling. My seven year old has really taken to jiu jitsu and is about to start a kids MMA class. It's (BJJ) a great work out and the kids are using something practical; they actually roll against each other, instead of practicing the endless katas.

All martial arts have merit and are only as good as the practicioner. That said Akido and Tae Kwon Do aren't generally regarded as ass-kicking styles. TKD is more sport oriented and Akido is more about redirecting without really hurting your opponent. Jiu Jitsu is good and Kenpo can be pretty brutal against an opponent.

The best part of the PPV for me was the "god bless god" shout out Brock gave to the man upstairs. All kidding aside, Lesnar is going to be a nightmare for the HW division.

What do you think of KenFlo calling out Penn? The December card is going to be epic!

See if you can find this guy to teach your kids:

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

No karate, but I've taught my kids useful things:

                    - throwing inside when the batter crowds the plate
                    - keep metal cleats sharp and slide into the ankles of the guy on the bag
                    - tag the face, not the feet

If you'd like, I can teach your kids these necessary skills. I don't do it for money. I just want kids to learn to play the right way.

If I'd have had a coach like you, I probably would have stuck with baseball.

It sounds like you were a victim of the sissy style of baseball.

The idea isn't to injure a particular player - it's to get in the head of the rest of the team. Make them think that if it happens to one of them, it might happen to the rest of them and that is when you've won the game. Scoring more runs is just a secondary result of the true victory.

Yeah we were laughing about Lesnar. It was almost like he was looking at God and saying: "Brock bless you"

Kenny looked very good, but I am not sure he is on BJs level.

Personally I think the younger you can get them involved in Martial Arts the better.

Depending on what kind of styles you want them to learn can also take some time.

The one major bit of advice I would give is try to avoid what I call Convenience Store Karate "Dojos". They are a dime a dozen and seeing how I took it, there's no way I could've gone back and been in the same class with 30 other brats learning moves at the same time all under the eye of just 1 or 2 instructors.

I took private lessons, 1 on 1 instruction and it was the best thing for me. I got my ass kicked bad on a regular basis by my Sensai, but in a weird sort of way I loved every minute of it.

Of course it was a lot more expensive, but to me it was personally worth it.

I learned a style called Gojo-Ryu which is Okinawan based. Though I didn't progress very far, I still felt like I learned a ton.

Also I agree with Junkie,,if they're interested in some type of Grappling, Wrestling or Jiu Jitsu style get them involved in that. Oft times a confrontation can be ended quickly with the right kind of hold.

Course the same can be said for a swift shot to the nuts.
