  • SEC and being overrated

probably posted before but I liked it.

    ask babs about this one

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Why do BYU and Utah fans constantly try and downplay the SEC?

The SEC is consistently, year-to-year, either the best or second best Conference in all of CFB. When Alabama wins tomorrow night that makes 6 SEC BCS Championships since 99', with four teams winning it in Tennessee, LSU, Florida and Alabama. Georgia & Auburn having won BCS Bowl games recently as well.

They are the best, most powerful conference. To try and debate that makes you look like an uneducated fan.

Look at the nonconference records against the other BCS conferences. The SEC isn't weak, but it isn't far and away the best conference. In fact, the Pac 10 compares very favorably. The SEC certainly plays the scheduling game the right way, at most one OOC game is a road game and three of the OOC games are automatic wins. Everyone enters the conference with bloated records and they all make each other look good.

Because of this, 2008 Florida goes in front of 2008 USC and 2007 LSU goes in front of 2007 USC. With the way USC prison raped Auburn in 2003, the polls just couldn't put 2004 Auburn in the national title game that year. I have my personal bias, but IMO, USC was the best team in both 2007 and 2008 (and the SEC has certainly been USC's you know what over the past 7-8 years). So, that makes two of those years questionable. Then in 2003 the consensus #1 in both polls didn't even play in the national title game. No one outside of SEC country really thinks 2003 LSU was the national champion over 2003 USC. This leaves you with 1998 Tennessee and 2006 Florida. Don't act like every SEC victory in the national title game is like 2005 Texas2004 USC or 2001 Miami.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

It's hard to compare conferences because there are different ways to do it. Who's the best top to bottom? Which would be measured by total OOC records. Or who's top three teams are the best? Usually when we compare conferences we subconsciously create a formula weighted very heavily to the top teams. The Pac 10 is usually top to bottom the best or in the top three because they're much better at the middle and the bottom compared to other conferences. The SEC and Big 12 have OK, Texas, Florida, LSU, Alabama which have been at the top over the past five years, but also have a lot of stinkers.
