  • Utes who attacked Whit during the tough times

I go to Utefans and see Ute fans who were talking about Whit getting fired mid-season last year, etc., and their current swaggar, and I get slightly nauseated. Whit's success is one of the happiest, most heart warming stories I've seen in sports. He's of the Lavelle tree. His alma mater wanted him back, the two rivals got into an epic bidding war, and he followed his heart. He went with the Utes. What person who truly loves the University of Utah wouldn't want the guy to succeed spectacularly? He put on the line his whole career and reputation, even his whole well being in the state of his fathers, birth and upbringing.

Now, it's a matter of record that I always was Whit's biggest cheerleader. I did always believe in him on the merits. I have lived through the lean years of Bill Meek, the dark days of Tom Lovat, the hopeful and painfully disappointed days of Wayne Howard, the false euphoria of Jim Fassel, the long slow climb and ultimate expiration of Ron McBride. To my untrained and inexperienced eye, Whit and his inexperienced staff and quarterback were showing great promise. There were some impressive highs each year, along with a near 70% winning percentage. Never had a U of U coach started out so strong, except for Urban Meyer.

I also believe it takes years to build what Whit has built, after suffering the wholesale losses he experienced after 2004, not to mention the injuries. A lot of football coaches have built great programs and traditions after slower starts than Whit had. Pete Carroll didn't set the world on fire from the start (lost to Utah in his first bowl game at USC). Tom McCartney at Colorado was 1-10 early on. There are many examples.

But what good hearted and rational Ute fan wouldn't have resolved all doubts in favor of Whit, wouldn't have wanted him to succeed and given him every possible chance to do so? A man who snubbed BYU and in doing so put it all on the line.

Right now I'm thinking that I wouldn't want any of those people who turned on Whit so quickly as neighbors, work colleagues, or in-laws. Okay, I give JazzyUte a break because he's super young and no one spills more ink and blood for the Utes than he does. Anyone in a similar category I forgive. But there are some who weren't. Like someone who sent me a PM after the Vegas game who's about my age and claimed to know what Chris Hill was thinking. Those people should be ashamed of themselves.

From what I'm given to understand from my family (no direct contact, myself) he's a kind, upstanding guy that you'd like your kids to come in contact with. I still found the KWhit jokes amusing from a rivalry standpoint.

I offer no opinion on what the Ute mindset should have been re: their coach.

I was pissed when BYU lost out on Whit and let Utah win that battle. Bronco hasn't been a bad consolation prize and rational BYU fans realize that BYU's program was in shambles when he took over. And I don't think BYU's failure to get over the top under Bronco is really due to his coaching or recruiting. I think it's mostly due to BYU's self-imposed limits. BYU will never be able recruit that many Stephenson Sylvesters in order to really field a top notch defense. I think BYU can have great o-lines, great QBs and even pretty damned good RBs and WRs in order to compete at the highest level. College offenses are predicated more on execution than sheer athleticism. Boise State shouldn't ever beat Oklahoma in a million years, yet they did.

But defense is bigger problem and not coincidentally BYU's major football problems in the past and have been rooted overwhelmingly on that side of the ball. Elite programs have superior athletes at the skill positions. And no amount of game planning and execution on defense can totally negate the advantage that teams like USC and Florida have at those positions if you don't have at least adequate athletes on defense.

During Bronco's tenure, BYU couldn't have ever competed with this year's Alabama team much less crush them. The scandinavian midgets in the secondary don't provide me with much reassurance.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

No kidding, SU. I'll bet some of those bastards didn't even have the guts to travel to NO to support the team.

Back off. Did you ever stop to consider that SU had previous commitments related to his church calling?

You act like sports message boards don't matter. Did you know that Mark Few blamed "Internet jackals" (i.e., Utefans) for Giacoletti getting fired?

Mark Few should probably worry more about the fact that his "best team" ever is going to be a 10 seed.

If utefans was responsible for Giacoletti getting fired, then I am proud to participate on that board.

                        Bill MacCartney not Tom.

                            I meant Bill.
